MAJOR NFL INJURY NEWS, MCNABB BENCHED & CMSU ALUMS: PAY ATTENTION

Bunch of big names on the injury list Friday. Troy Polamalu has been downgraded to doubtful for the Steelers game with the Jets. More bad news for Pittsburgh, tight end Heath Miller was also downgraded to doubtful after having recurring problems from a concussion he sustained nearly two weeks ago against Baltimore. San Diego all-world tight end Antonio Gates appears to be out for the remainder of the regular season, his foot injury just isn't responding to treatment. Eagle cornerback Assante Samuel & WR DeSean Jackson are both listed as questionable for Philly's big showdown with the Giants. Kyle Orton hasn't throw a single pass all week & we might be closer to seeing Tim Tebow as the starter. It looks as tho the Packers are going to start Matt Flynn in place of Aaron Rodgers, who suffered his second concussion of the season last week.

The most important injury news to those of us who pull for the Chiefs is whether or not Matt Cassel will start against the Rams on Sunday. I'm beginning to think he won't, I just question the risk of him playing less than two weeks after his appendectomy. This is truly a "must-win" situation for the Chiefs, but I'll be surprised to see Cassel play, regardless of what is being put out by the Chiefs & Cassel himself.

Mike Shanahan might as well of said "we don't want Donovan McNabb & we will either trade or release him as soon as the season is over." By benching him for Rex Grossman, McNabb designated the #3 quarterback, Shanahan has made it crystal clear NcNabb won't be back. This is the second time he has been benched this season, not what a coach would do to his "franchise quarterback."

Remember all the talk about the revival of LaDanian Tomlinson's career? Heard any of it lately? He's finished for all intents & purposes. L.T. started off with a bang, first five games were 62, 76, 70, 133 & 94 yards rushing. But the last eight have been 55, 54, 55, 57, 36, 49, 47 & 49. Playing at Pittsburgh on Sunday, I don't see Tomlinson making any kind of comeback & this game is followed with a trip to Chicago to play another stingy defense. I doubt he'll be back with New York in 2011, any takers?

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delaney said the conference might have a change of heart regarding their choice of names for the re-aligned league. The "Legends & Leaders" went over like a turd in a punch bowl. People hated it, mocked it, laughed out loud at the idea. Delaney said "I knew we'd never get a 90% positive reaction to the new division names, but we didn't expect a 90% negative response, we were obviously caught completely by surprise at the level of disapproval." Why? Have you ever heard of focus groups? Maybe a few on-campus groups could have told Delaney what a horrible idea they had come up with naming the divisions Legends & Leaders. The arrogance of Delaney explains a lot, the stupid names & it also goes a long way to explaining the BCS. He's been a huge supporter since day 1.

Ralph Friedgen, head coach of the Maryland Terapins, got off the coaching hot seat by improving 2009's 2-10 to a very respectable 8-4 with a bowl bid. Apparently it may not be enough, the word out of College Park Maryland is Friedgen may be asked to resign or retire so the Terps can bring in Mike Leach, former Texas Tech coach. Leach is currently embroiled in a wrongful termination lawsuit with the university but he did color commentary for CBS Sports this fall & wants another head coaching post.

Hey, all you Central Missouri State alums out there! Pay attention! The NCAA Division II Player of the Year award, the Harlon Hill Trophy, is going to one of your own. Mules quarterback Eric Czerniewski was selected to win the award. He had a great year throwing for 5,207-yards & 46 touchdowns. I know I have a couple of dozen CMSU alums who come here everyday & to them, I say congrats!
