THIS DIDN'T TAKE LONG, NCAA SUSPENDS QB PRYOR & 5 OTHERS
Just about 10 hours ago I told you about trouble brewing at Ohio State involving as many as ten Buckeye players in what I was calling "Tattoo-Gate." I said considering OSU has a Sugar Bowl date on January 4th, it made sense the NCAA would be all over this. Well turns out all the hubbub actually occurred in 2009. Six starters, including QB Terrelle Pryor, have been suspended for 1 to 5 games to start the 2011 season. Somehow they escaped any discipline for the Sugar Bowl, tho I question just how focused this group will be in their preparation for playing Arkansas.
The players suspended were Pryor(5 games), OT Mike Adams(5), RB Daniel Herron(5), WR Devier Posey(5), DT Solomon Thomas(5) & LB Jordan Whiting(1 game). All but Whiting are juniors, so they would be eligible to enter the NFL draft & suffer no suspensions. Problem is none of these kids are high round prospects right now, each needed their senior season to improve their draft stock. With no collective bargaining agreement in place, there's no guarantee the NFL won't have a work stoppage.
The players were bagged for selling their conference championship rings for $1,000 each, autographs, various trophy's & awards plus jerseys & pants from bowl games. It worked out to about $2,500 per man except Whiting. Every dime of this money will have to be paid back to a charity before the players are eligible again. The money they derived from selling the items was then used in the tattoo parlor that also bought a large portion of the memorabilia. Terrelle Pryor Tweeted last night "I paid for my tats, GOBucks." It does appear Pryor did pay for his tats, but he paid for them by selling awards, autographs & gifts from the university. Once again, the combination of the me-me-me generation & a social network works against the Tweeter.
So if this group stays in Columbus, sits out their suspensions, what happens to OSU's season? They would miss games with Akron, Toledo, Miami(Fla.), Colorado & Michigan State. They would be eligible to return for the 1st conference road game.....at Nebraska.
