IS WEIS LEAVING? MUM'S THE WORD AT ARROWHEAD, WHAT A SURPRISE
So Todd Haley was surprised about the "Charlie Weis to Florida" story. At least that's his version of it:
"It's news to me, I have no idea, that's not something I would talk about right now. Our focus is on the Oakland Raiders. At a later date, if something comes up, I will surely talk about it."
"I'm unaware of anything. Charlie was out there coaching today(Friday) & we're getting ready to beat the Oakland Raiders."
After hearing Haley's comments, I'm almost certain Weis is gone. Haley took the company line, the Pioli line, the Patriot line, but he's not a very adept liar. Plus, if Weis wasn't going & this was all a fabricated story trumped up by ESPN's Chris Mortensen & The NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora, Haley or Pioli would have trotted Charlie out there in front of the media to deny, deny, deny. Charlie Weis was no place to be found yesterday, he "wasn't available" to contradict this story.
So why would Charlie Weis want to leave an up & coming team who's best football lays ahead of it? The money certainly wouldn't be an issue, no way does the offensive coordinator's job at Florida pay more than the Chiefs would. On the surface it would appear Weis had a free hand to run his offense & call the plays the way he wanted. Or did he? Was Weis fed up with the "go for it on 4th down mentality that Haley has embraced? Was the incident in last Sunday's game a deal breaker? Late in the 3rd quarter, with the Chiefs leading 34-14 & facing a 2nd & 10, QB Matt Cassel comes out of the game & Brody Croyle replaces him. I thought at the time Haley was pulling Cassel too early in the game, they only had a 20-point lead. The TV cameras show Cassel wandering the sideline, frantically talking to assistant coaches & Mike Vrabel. Croyle throws an interception on 3rd down & when the next offensive series began, Cassel was back at the helm. Both Cassel & Haley offered really lame excuses as to why Cassel wasn't in the game, "we wanted to clear up a couple of things strategy-wise, so we took him out & once we got them cleared up, he went back in." Really? You honestly believe most knowledgeable fans will buy that crap? Anyone watching the game could see Cassel never spoke a word to Haley on the sideline. He was jerked out of that game in mid-series for a reason known only to Haley. When the head coach was satisfied he had made his point, Cassel was allowed to return. Mike Vrabel & Haley had a brief, but heated discussion during this time.
This could be a major part of Weis' decision, Haley's temper as it relates to running this team on gameday. Enough of the childish tantrums. Screwing with your franchise quarterback's head is a very dangerous thing to do. Thrusting an unprepared Brody Croyle into the game & having him fail, is also dangerous. Croyle wasn't given any plays that ultimately would succeed when he started in San Diego. Was this edict from Haley? Does Weis have difficulty swallowing Haley's crap, especially considering the championship ring margin held by Weis, three to none?
For the nay-sayers who believe Weis doesn't like recruiting, know this, new Florida head coach Will Muschamp is one of the best recruiters in the college football. Charlie wouldn't have to do much. Maybe Weis & his family don't like living in Kansas City. Hey, it could happen. But in the end, it's probably friction between Haley & Weis.
If in fact Weis does depart for the "Sunshine State", is the Josh McDaniels' rumor credible? I think it is, McDaniels was the offensive coordinator for New England the year Cassel took over for an injured Tom Brady. He's been on Scott Pioli's staff before, having pretty good success & since all non-Patriot candidates would have a sizeable disadvantage , McDaniels makes sense. The most important thing about this decision is, are the Chiefs, Matt Cassel & the offense better off with Josh McDaniels than Charlie Weis?
I wish I could dismiss this story as B.S. Having Charlie Weis running this offense is a good thing now & for the future. But knowing Todd Haley's temperament, are you really that shocked? Do you really buy into Haley's denial of the situation? That's why you shouldn't e surprised if Charlie gets in his cart & heads for Gainesville. And if Weis does leave Kansas City, we may never know what really caused it, that's the Patriot-way things get swept under the rug out at One Arrowhead Drive.
