JETS SUFFER MAJOR LOSS, BROWNS DECIDE ON A COACH & T-SHIRT OF THE WEEK
Just 4 days from their playoff showdown with the Patriots, the Jets suffered a major setback. Right tackle Damien Woody, a 4-year starter with New York, will undergo surgery to repair his left Achilles tendon. He suffered the injury in the last minute of the game in Indianapolis. There was absolutely no talk about an injury this severe but the Jets had to file their injury report with the league & it came out this afternoon. Woody was originally drafted by New England in 2009 but has been with the Jets for 4 years. He will be replaced by Wayne Hunter, a 7-year veteran.
Before Michigan finally signed Brady Hoke to become their new head coach, word is there was another candidate. The Columbia Tribune reported tonight the maize & blue had contacted John Caponigro, the agent for Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel & a meeting with Michigan athletic director David Brandon was set. After Pinkel did "some serious soul searching" he called Caponigro & told him to call it off, he was staying at Mizzou. It was after that call, Brandon put in a call to Brady Hoke & he accepted the job. Hoke's arrival isn't sitting well with the team's top two quarterbacks. Denard Robinson was a big supporter of Rich Rodriguez & his commitment to the program might not be what it should. Backup Tate Forcier is already telling teammates he intends to transfer.
A number of big names in college football have decided to stay in school instead of going to an uncertain future in the NFL. Since the collective bargaining agreement negotiations aren't setting the world on fire, many college underclassmen don't want to be left without a place to play next fall & many are staying school. The last day for declaration is Friday. Those staying include Oklahoma WR Ryan Broyles, Oklahoma State QB Branden Weeden & WR Justin Blackmon are coming back. Weeden threw 34 TD's last season & Broyles & Blackmon were 2-3 in receiving yardage. Nebraska DT Jared Crick & Iowa WR Marvin McNutt will also return. Iowa safety Tyler Sash will move onto to the NFL, he returned 3 interceptions for scores including the game winner in the Insight Bowl.
The Cleveland Browns have come to a decision on their vacant head coaching position. Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will take the job. Can he do the same with Browns quarterback Colt McCoy he did with Sam Bradford?
I've received a number of questions via email & a few in the comments section. If you have a question regarding the Chiefs, please get it in, I plan to answer everything I've gotten later this afternoon. If you want to go the email route, send it to rich@richsfootballreport.com or post it in the comments section & I promise to get to it.
The Ravens play the Steelers on Saturday in the rubber game to see who plays for the AFC Championship. Each team won by 3-points earlier. Both teams are very familiar with each other & sometimes familiarity breeds contempt. Just look at the T-shirt Baltimore linebacker Terrell Suggs wore to practice today.

Kinda speaks volumes of how these teams feel about each other doesn't it?
