BRONCOS SIGN A NEW COACH, CAM'S COMING OUT & WHO'S FAVORED TO WIN THE BCS IN 2012?
The Denver Broncos have a new head coach, it's John Fox, formerly the head coach in Carolina. His contract wasn't renewed but it didn't take long to find employment. I think Fox is a pretty decent coach, he just grew stale after 9 seasons with the Panthers. Fox reportedly took quite a pay cut from his Carolina contract, the broncos were known to be low-balling their candidates with nothing more than $3 million per year. Fox made almost double of that with the Panthers. But I guess if you want to stay employed, doing so for a measly $3 million is part of it. I used to deal with a number of former & current NFL coaches in my years in Las Vegas, John Fox was one of my favorites, he was a real decent guy. Now he'll have John Elway looking over his shoulder as he attempts to rebuild the fortunes of Pat Bowlen's Broncos. Now only the Oakland Raiders are without a head coach. There's a big friggin' surprise.
Former Chiefs' linebacker & Forty-Niner defensive coordinator Mike Manusky, will fill the D-coordinator vacancy in San Diego. It was rumored to be going to Dave Wandstedt before today.
Also on the move is LSU offensive coordinator Gary Crowton. This will make most of the Bayou Bengal faithful real happy. He was almost universally despised down in LSU country. He will make a lateral move to Maryland to work for new head coach Randy Edsall. Crowton got a healthy 20% raise in his new 3-year deal with the Terps. No word yet on who will replace him at LSU.
Also coming out of Baton Rouge today was news leading rusher Steven Ridley will make himself available for the NFL Draft. Ridley was one of the very few bright spots in the Tiger's offense this season. He rushed for 1,147-yards & 15 touchdowns. The 6' 223-pound back should have a good NFL future.
This year's Heisman Trophy winner, Cam Newton will also take his act to the pros, announcing he will leave Auburn after winning the BCS title game Monday night. What does he have to prove? It's time to move on, unfortunately the investigations into his "Play for Pay" controversy will not quit. Newton rates a late first round pick with me as of now.
Kentucky's do-everything Randall Cobb will leave the Wildcat program a year early for the NFL. Cobb is an electrifying player, used all over the field by coach Joker Phillips. Cobb played wide receiver, running back, wildcat quarterback, returned punts & kickoffs & was the holder on field goal & point after attempts. He is a really dynamic player, check these stats, Cobb caught 84 passes for 1,017-yards & 7 touchdowns, he rushed for 424-yards & ran for 5 scores. he also completed 5 of 10 passes with 3 touchdowns. The 5'11" 185-pound Cobb will most likely be a wide receiver at the next level.
So who do the bookmakers favor to win next season's BCS title? After 5 consecutive wins, I think you'd have to make an SEC team the favorite, but since so many of the usual suspects are losing so many important pieces, the bookmakers looked elsewhere for a favorite.
Oklahoma 7 to 2
Alabama 15 to 2
Florida St 10 to 1
Boise State 12 to 1
LSU 12 to 1
Oregon 14 to 1
Florida 15 to 1
