NO SB HYPE, NO BRRR, JUST NEWS INCLUDING CHIEFS' OC

The Chiefs announced their new offensive coordinator today & it should surprise no one, Todd Haley will be calling the plays. Offensive line coach Bill Muir was named to replace the departed Charlie Weis. The 68-year old Muir was an offensive coordinator for Tampa Bay during the Jon Gruden days. Gruden called all the plays & I expect Haley will do the same. In fact the announcement included the line "Muir will continue in his role as offensive line coach." No word on who will replace Weis as quarterbacks' coach, Nick Sirianni, listed as an offensive assistant, might get the promotion. The elevation of both Muir & possibly Sirianni has left the Chiefs without a head coaching candidate on the offensive side just in case Haley stumbles. I don't like any part of the way things have transpired since Weis left. With the much more difficult schedule & the coaching changes, I don't have a lot of confidence.

Jamaal Charles was named the FedEx Ground player of the year & Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named FedEx's Air player of the year. Charles had a 6.38 yards-per-carry average, 2nd best in NFL history.

Bengal wide receiver Chad 85 has reversed his decision to change his last name back to Johnson. He said yesterday he would remain Ochocinco. I know you'll sleep better tonight hearing this news.

Former USC quarterback Mitch Mustain was preparing to go to a QB camp to prepare him for the NFL Combine. The most highly recruited high school player from the 2006 class could never win the starting job for the Trojans after transferring from Arkansas. His preparation is going to be put on hold as he was arrested yesterday for possession of prescription drugs with the intent to distribute. He was released on a $30,000 bond.

More bad news for the beleaguered USC football program, already on a two-year post season ban & dealing with the loss of 15 scholarships over a 3-year span. Coach Lane Kiffin has been named in an NCAA investigation, along with former assistant David Reaves, in a "failure to monitor" violation. It stems from sending a female recruiting team to high school football games. This is a pretty serious charge, a similar one got Indiana basketball coach Kelvin Sampson barred from coaching for a couple of years. I doubt Kiffin will see the same punishment, but once again the University of Tennessee is reminded of their awful decision to hire Kiffin.

Also out of the PAC-10, defensive back De'Anthony Thomas, one of the most highly recruited players on the West Coast, has signed a national letter of intent with Oregon. He had given USC a verbal commitment last May & this came totally out of the blue just one day before National Signing Day. The longtime balance of power in the PAC-10 might be shifting north, at least for the foreseeable future.

Here's another recruiting beauty, Floyd Raven, a defensive back from Reserve Louisiana, wanted to go to Texas A&M but his mom wanted him to attend Ole Miss. So mom decided to forge her son's name on his national letter of intent for the University of Mississippi. On Tuesday Raven discovered what his mom had done & after some legal wrangling, he was excused from Ole Miss & signed with the Aggies. He said his mom was only trying to do what she thought was best for his future & he had already forgiven her. Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt wasn't as understanding "she wanted him to go to Oxford to play not A&M."

With 3 of the top-5 recruits still undecided, I won't give you the preliminary rankings for national signing day. Suffice to say it's the same cast of charachters as almost every other year, Bama, Auburn, Texas etc.

Michael Vick's having another party. The last party he was involved with resulted in a shooting outside in valet parking. He was exonerated from any responsibility in the shooting. Now Vick will host a party this Friday at Dallas' Deux Lounge. Because of concerns for security rather extensive measures have been taken for the party. Vick will have his own security detail, the NFL will send a secruity detail, the club will use their entire security detail plus the club owner said he had hired 3 off-duty members of the Dallas SWAT team to be on the premises Friday night. Does this seem excessive to anyone? Does it seem like maybe Michael Vick shouldn't be hosting a party like this right now considering everything he's gone thru & the security requirements deemed necessary for such an event? I'm just sayin'.

Bob Griese is calling it quits, he will no longer be in the booth as a color commentator for ABC/ESPN. The Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback went into broadcasting after 14 years with the Miami Dolphins & stayed with ABC/ESPN for 24 seasons of college football.

Look for a shakeup of Bo Pelini's Nebraska coaching staff. last night after National Signing Day concluded, the Huskers always have a traditional dinner to discuss how they fared in the recruiting wars. The dinner is attended by both boosters & the media. Last night three assistant coaches were not at the dinner & Pelini refused to discuss their absence. The O-coordinator, WR coach & DB coach were not in attendance.

Praise the Lord!!! We have been rescued!!! For a mere $400, we can now get to the top of our property. Where we are able to go once we would get up there is unknown, the guys told us almost everything is closed & the roads are still treacherous. Many of them still unplowed at all. But if we wait till tomorrow or Saturday, the road at the top of our hill could be well plowed. We had a drift on the way up the hill that was almost 5' high & about 12' long. The $400 really stuck in my craw until I realized how brutal this much snow removal is on the average pickup truck's drive train. Plus with chains they wouldn't drive onto our driveway, so they did it by hand. These guys really worked hard. Anyway it's done & we are no longer marooned, at least until it snows again on Monday. If it looks like another bad one, we may consider a hotel, even a week of off-season rates are cheaper than another visit by the snow plows. Don't know about being cooped up in a hotel/motel room for a week tho, talk about cabin fever.
