CHIEFS GET A MEAGER WIN IN LION TAMPERING CLAIM, COLTS CUT SANDERS & "TIDE FOR TOOMER'S" GOES TO WORK
If you'll recall, after Todd Haley was named Chiefs' coach, he & new GM Scott Pioli, began to clear out a lot of the Carl Peterson/Herm Edwards' personnel. As this was going on, new Detroit defensive coordinator, Gunther Cunningham, said "I hope they keep cutting guys, there a few over there I know & like." He signed Turk McBride & said in the Detroit papers he was very interested in disgruntled safety Jarrad Page. The NFL launched a tampering investigation & they have finally concluded it with a slap on the wrist for Detroit. The Lions will forfeit one of their 7th round draft picks in this draft & will exchange spots in the 5th round with Kansas City. Big whoop. This is the pidliest award I've ever seen in a tampering case. I hope the Chiefs will appeal the decision. I thought switching in the 3rd or at worst the 4th.
Both sides in the NFL labor negotiations have agreed to keep whatever happens in front of their federal mediator between them. No statements, no griping, no accusations will come out of these meetings. So they say.
Caught just a few minutes of ESPN2's Mike & Mike in the Morning but what a couple of minutes. Mark Schlereth called Redskin coach Mike Shanahan a "real control freak who needs to let go & let his coaches coach." It's been my opinion for a long time that Shanahan is one of the most overrated head coaches in the NFL. I like hearing a Pro Bowl winner with 3 Super Bowl rings speak out in such a fashion.
Speaking of Denver, new coach John Fox is changing his defense back to a 4-3 after a 2-year try with a 3-4 scheme. It failed miserably, mostly because they didn't have the personnel to play a 3-4. Fox will get this defense turned around quickly. The offense, who knows how long it will take.
The Colts released often-injured safety Bob Sanders today. The 2-time Pro Bowl selection has only been healthy enough to play in 9 of the past 48 games. He is one of the best run support safeties in the game but his smaller size proved to be a handicap. He'll sign with another team, but the Colts just couldn't keep paying a premium salary to a guy who couldn't stay on the field.
Fans of the Alabama Crimson Tide have banded together to pay for new mature trees to be planted in place of the 130-year old oaks that are dying in Auburn's Toomer's Corner. They were poisoned by a deranged 62-year old Bama fan with a herbicide that will kill the trees. An Alabama graduate student formed "Tide for Toomer's" on Facebook & Twitter. In less than 24-hours, they have raised over $6,000. They're going to need a lot more money to replace these huge trees, but the group said it is their goal to pay for the entire process of removal & replacement. Coach Nick Saban denounced the tree poisoning & said this fan, Harvey Updyke, "we are sincerely saddened by this destructive behavior from an individual who certainly does not represent our institution, football program or our fans in any way. It is important we continue to respect each other in the spirit of good sportsmanship for many years to come." Maybe Coach Saban could cough up $10k or so out of his nearly $6 million salary to help the fund.
