ANOTHER EX-PLAYER DIES FROM BRAIN INJURY, PACK SB RINGS ON HOLD & CHIEFS COULD BE OFF THE HOOK RENT-WISE.

Former NFL wide receiver Drew Hill passed away Friday night after suffering two massive strokes. He went to the hospital mid-week after fainting on the golf course. He was diagnosed with high blood pressure & released. Hill, 54, complained of extreme headaches Friday afternoon & was taken to the hospital. He played 15 years for the L.A. Rams, Houston Oilers & Atlanta Falcons. He established the Oilers' record for career receptions. Hill also scored 60 touchdowns during his career on 634 receptions. I hope his family will donate his brain to be examined by the group that has made NFL concussions their number one priority.

Steve Sabol, President of NFL Films, suffered a seizure in Kansas City just before the Committee for 101 dinner two weeks ago. He has been diagnosed with a brain tumor & will begin chemotherapy & radiation treatments immediately.

Mizzou quarterback Blaine Gabbert has private workouts scheduled for the Cardinals, Panthers, Broncos, Dolphins & Vikings. The other two teams expected to book time with the Tiger QB is Buffalo & Cincinnati. Word out of Columbia is that Denver head coach John Fox & team president John Elway were very impressed with Gabbert & want to see more.

The Chiefs could be looking for a new backup QB, anyone really surprised? They have private workouts with Idaho QB Nathan Enderle, Delaware's Pat Devlin & TCU's Andy Dalton. There's also speculation Kansas City will meet with Iowa's Ricky Stanzi. In my opinion, throw these four in a bag & choose one, they're all pretty much the same guy. All four are extremely smart, have decent size, a lot of experience & none of them has a big arm. They also have a private session with Mizzou's Aldon Smith(he'll never last till Kansas City's pick at #21) & Georgia OLB Justin Smith(great going downhill, very questionable balance in coverage).

Here's another name to file away, Colin Miller of Central Michigan. Miller is a 6' 2" 293-pound center with 4-years of starting experience. He's smallish, but he has some power, second amongst all center prospects with 32 bench press reps. Two Chiefs' personnel people were on hand at Central Michigan's pro day last week & they spent most of their time watching Miller.

I told you after the combine Alabama QB Greg McElroy led all prospects in the Wonderlic test scores. He achieved a 43, Blaine Gabbert was second with a 42. Offensive tackle Anthony Costonzo of Boston College was next with a 41. So who was last? Florida offensive tackle Carl Johnson, who managed just 6 correct answers.

At the top of the "with friends like this who needs enemies?" list sits Tiki Barber. The former New York Giant running back is attempting a comeback at age 36 after not playing since the 2006 season. Tiki isn't the most popular guy in player circles but he's got a new defender. Another former Giant, Lawrence Taylor is "vouching" for Barber. The former coke-head who recently plead guilty to a sexual assault of a 15-year old prostitute is now in Barber's corner. So he's got that going for him.

Additional fallout from Adrian Peterson's unfortunate "the NFL is like slavery" remark keeps coming in, this time from Saints fullback Heath Evans. He said "I wish I had the athletic ability of Adrian Peterson's little finger. But he's an idiot & what he said was moronic at best. The owners are banking on these kind of comments to kill us in the media & with Fans." Evans is right, too bad the union or whatever it's called now since decertification, can't put it's members in gag mode so stupid stuff like this isn't said in public.

Another thought about the former union trying to intimidate first round draft picks into staying away from the NFL's two telecasts of April's draft. Threatening them with "rookies might find it hard to fit in with their new teammates" is total crap. That one spun by Drew Brees. Maybe he should play for another coach, Sean Payton, Saints' head coach, crossed NFLPA picket lines during the 1987 strike to play for the Chicago bears as a replacement player. Never heard one word out of Brees about that nugget. Brees also said it could be "troubling to rookies having to walk across the stage & shake hands with the guy who locked you out of your job." You know it could be troubling dealing with the player's union after they gave away nearly 40% of the first round guaranteed money to the owners in negotiations. I was solidly in the players camp coming into these negotiations, but they continue to insult me & millions like me with their lecturing.

Now something Jackson County tax payers will be happy to hear, the Chiefs could be off the hook for their stadium rent if games are canceled. That's right, according to The Kansas City Business Journal, they have a rent waiver in their lease with the county that allows them to skate on much of the rent during "natural disaster, terrorist attack, strike, lockout or other labor disturbances." The Tampa Bay franchise has already told the stadium authority they will not allow the county to lose revenues on the stadium regardless of the labor situation. What will the Chiefs do?

Mike Vrabel, a longtime player rep in the NFLPA, stated over the weekend he wants three players & three owners,Carolina's Jerry Richardson, Dallas' Jerry Jones & New England's Robert Kraft to sit down & hammer out a deal. No lawyers, no hired guns from the outside, no commissioner & no NFLPA boss DeMaurice Smith. No lawyers? Yeah, that's not gonna happen. Nice thought Mike, but that's not gonna happen.

When you win the Super Bowl, two really cool things happen after the game. You get a monster championship ring & a trip to the White House to meet the President. Since the lockout, management & the players can have absolutely no outside contact, so no ring ceremony & no trip to Washington. Their championship rings haven't even been ordered yet, that's playing hardball isn't it?
