CHIEFS' DRAFT: ME VS. THE KC STAR & A COUPLE OF QB'S TO PAY ATTENTION TO
Beginning Monday, The Kansas City Star is offering their prediction on who the Chiefs will draft, round-by-round. Their first round prediction is Penn State center Stefan Wisniewski. The reasoning behind the pick by The Star's Adam Teicher was that the interior linemen in this draft are superior in overall quality to the offensive tackles. Hogwash. He said Florida's Mike Pouncey will most likely be gone by time the Chiefs get around to picking 21st. Here's my rebuttal to Teicher's selection:
I don't see anyway Wisniewski gets picked in round one, I have him as a late 2nd round choice. I think Pouncey might be a better guard, but he does have experience at center. The 2nd best center in this draft IMO is Florida State's Rodney Hudson. Taking the 3rd best center with the 21st overall pick makes no sense to me. Two years ago I said Cal's Alex Mack was the best center prospect, he went to Cleveland with the 21st overall pick. Last season I said Markice Pouncey was the best center prospect & he went 18th to Pittsburgh. These two have already made the Pro Bowl for the AFC. None of the center prospects in this draft compare to Mack or Markice Pouncey, not even close, so why use the 21st overall selection for the 3rd best center? Here's who & why if I was picking 21st for Kansas City.
1A. OT Anthony Castonzo-Boston College
I doubt he'll make it past the Giants at #19. But if he's available, Castonzo should trump all other prospects left on the board. Started 54 consecutive games at B.C.

1B. NT Phil Taylor-Baylor
Opposing runners gashed the Chiefs between the tackles & the lack of an anchor at nose tackle was the main reason. Taylor is a monster at 6' 3 3/4" & 337 pounds. He's very powerful, has very good technique in that he plays low, gets off the snap quickly & can drag down ball carriers with one hand. Even when double-teamed, Taylor effectively clogs the middle, something the Chiefs haven't had in years. He was dismissed from Penn State after the 2007 season for undisclosed reasons but he's been a model citizen, student & player since he arrived in Waco.
1C. OT Gabe Carimi-Wisconsin
Played both tackle positions for the Badgers. Plays every snap to the whistle, mean, tough, very physical with a high football intelligence. Good feet, excellent fundamentals, could be an instant starter at right tackle in Kansas City.
I'm also saying Mizzou OLB Aldon Smith, Alabama WR Julio Jones, Wisconsin DE J.J. Watt & Cal DE Cameron Jordan will already be gone when the Chiefs pick at #21. Any of these would be a major upgrade for Kansas City, but don't hold your breath. I'll have analysis of the round two selection in tomorrow's Star later Tuesday afternoon.
Be prepared for the Denver Broncos to make a surprising pick at #2. With John Elway running the franchise now, I think he's going to try to put his stamp on the team with that second overall pick. Don't be shocked if the Broncos pick a quarterback in either round one or two. Elway isn't married to either Tim Tebow or Kyle Orton.
Yesterday I watched the Texas Longhorns' spring game & the MVP, if you will, wasn't starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert, but his backup, Case McCoy, younger brother of Colt McCoy. He quarterbacked the 2nd string offense against the first string defense. He had better stats than Gilbert, threw a touchdown & no turnovers. Plus he had almost double the yardage of Gilbert. McCoy, a sophomore, is bigger than his older brother & has a more powerful arm. It remains to be seen which way Mack Brown will go with his rebuilding Horns' squad.

Case McCoy, Texas soph. QB
Looking for a Matt Cassel pick in this draft? A guy who didn't start in college because he was overshadowed by a name QB? A guy who can make all the throws required by an NFL signal caller? A guy to keep an eye out for is Boise State's Mike Coughlin. The 6' 5" 219-pound Coughlin impressed every scout that's seen his pro day workout. He had but 28 passing attempts while backing up Kellen Moore, college football's most efficient passer. He might get tabbed as early as round six. The arm & his size make him an intriguing prospect.

Mike Coughlin, Boise State
The amount of spam I'm receiving from Eastern Europe & the Middle East is truly alarming. I was getting 3-5 a week, lately it's been 4-6 per day. Unfortunately, GoDaddy.com doesn't offer a filter for either my comment section or my email account. Anyone else receiving copious amounts of bogus spam from across the pond?
Lord that was a horrible NCAA title game tonight wasn't it? Butler couldn't get anything to drop even if they had a funnel. The officiating wasn't great either. UCONN's size & length was a huge factor in the game, but more than anything it was Butler's inability to sink anything inside the paint. Tough to watch, I had no wager, no bracket, I was just hoping to see a competitive game but it wasn't to be. Did you see the CBS Sports bracket contest was won by a 63-year old librarian? She had it won last weekend as she correctly picked the final four of UCONN, Kentucky, VCU & Butler. She had UCONN beating Butler in the final, how's that? Not a fan of college basketball, she picked her entire bracket by how well she liked the mascots. She chose UCONN tonight because she said the Butler bulldog was scary while the UCONN husky appeared to be a very friendly dog. Makes all that work you did on your bracket seem rather worthless huh?
