CHIEFS' DRAFT: ME VS. THE KC STAR, ROUND VI & CHIEFS NATIONALLY TELEVISED IN PRESEASON
We enter the home stretch in our examination of Adam Teicher's NFL Draft predictions for the Kansas City Chiefs. Teicher, Chiefs' beat writer for The Kansas City Star, selected Louisville running back Bilal Powell in today's edition. I like Powell, like my choice of Stevan Ridley, Powell didn't get much opportunity to play until this past season & like Ridley, he made the most of it. Powell looks small(5' 10" & 205) but he's primarily an inside runner. I preferred Ridley as he's larger, is a better blocker & breaks more tackles, but Powell can be a force at the next level. That's provided he doesn't put the ball on the ground like he's been prone to do. My problem with Teicher's prediction is that I doubt Powell will last until Kansas City chooses in the 6th round. My choices so far:
1. Phil Taylor-nose tackle-Baylor
2. Rodney Hudson-center/guard-Florida State
3. James Brewer-offensive tackle-Indiana
4. Dwayne Harris-wide receiver-East Carolina
5A. Stevan Ridley-running back-LSU
5B. Stephen Burton-wide receiver-West Texas A&M
My choices for Kansas City's sixth round pick would include:
6A. Pat Devlin-quarterback-Delaware
He's not Joe Flacco but he does have upside & that's what you look for in the later rounds, someone who might develop into a quality NFL player with improved coaching. Devlin is 6' 3" & 225, he originally signed with Penn State but lost the quarterback duel with Daryll Clark. He did see playing time for the Nittany Lions tho completing 25 of 47 for 459-yards, four touchdowns & no interceptions. He transferred to Delaware & instantly became the starter for the Division I-AA Fightin' Blue Hens. His TD to int. ratio as a starter was 38 to 12 & he guided Delaware to the I-AA championship game before narrowly losing 20-19. Didn't throw downfield a lot in Delaware's offense, mostly dink & dunk. Good, quick release but ball flutters too often, not a tight spiral. Very smart & coachable.

Pat Devlin-QB-Delaware
6B. Mario Harvey-linebacker-Marshall
My pal John Cooney over at Fantasy Football Masterminds put me on this prospect. Harvey was a defensive end for the Thundering Herd & recorded 21.5 sacks in his 4-years in Huntington. Just under 6' tall, Harvey weighs in at a very stout 250-pounds. After looking thru my notes from the two Marshall games I saw, he made some plays but seemed too often to be out of the play. Short armed, he got engulfed by blockers & didn't move well in his backpeddle. But when he moved upfield, he closed quickly & had some pop in his tackles. Would probably be best at inside backer.

6C. Mike Mohamed-linebacker-California
He looks the part at 6' 3" 241, long arms & decent speed. Smart, 3-year starter who's coachable & a team leader. What's the reason we're talking about Mohamed in the 6th round you ask? For all three years at Cal, he's played behind NFL first-round draft picks(Jacksonville's #1 Tyson Alualu & this year's Cameron Jordan) & that shades his overall production in my book. He doesn't appear to have great functional football strength & when the guys in front of him were blocked, Mohamed didn't do much. He doesn't close quickly enough as a blitzer & his range outside appears to be limited. Still, he could have a decent upside as he is a good athlete, extremely smart & will soak up good coaching.

6D. Sione Fua-nose tackle-Stanford
Team captain-extremely smart & very coachable, Fua is very athletic for a nose tackle, was a heavy-weight wrestling champion in high school. He has large hands & long arms, understands playing with leverage. Is strictly a 2-down run-stuffing-space-eater. No pass rush whatsoever but he could fill a need, a tough, reliable backup nose tackle.

Kenny Britt finds himself in trouble again, the Tennessee Titans wide receiver was arrested in new Jersey this evening. After a bit of a chase, Britt finally pulled his SUV over for police. He was charged with eluding police, a felony, lying to a police officer, hindering apprehension & obstruction all misdemeanors. Britt allegedly obstructed the officers as they tried to apprehend his friend Jerel Lord who fled the scene before the car even came to a halt. Lord was charged with marijuana possession, resisting arrest & obstruction. The is the 2nd time Britt has been arrested in three months, his off-season isn't going well. As the Titans' 1st round selection in '09 but his impact has been sporadic because of poor practice habits, injury & inconsistent quarterback play. Because of the NFL lockout, Tennessee can't have any contact with Britt, so he's on his own & that's been a problem lately.
I need to make a correction. My age is showing. I told you last week Peyton & Ashley Manning had twin boys, Mosely & Marshall. Wrong.....Mosely is a girl. Like I said, my age is showing, just didn't see Mosely as a girl's name. Sorry.
The Chiefs will get a nationally televised preseason game with Tampa Bay August 12th. The game will be played at Arrowhead Stadium & televised by FOX. It will mark the homecoming of Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman, who attended Grandview High School & Aqib Talib, a former Kansas Jayhawk. That is if Talib can stay out of jail, he's been charged in an attempted shooting in Texas.
The remainder of Kansas City's preseason slate will include a road game in Baltimore, the Governor's cup game at Arrowhead & the finale in Green Bay against the defending champs. Pretty tough exhibition schedule.
