WHISTLEBLOWER SALEAUMUA GETS REWARDED & TOOMER APOLOGIZES FOR "GESTAPO" REMARKS
Former Chiefs' Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dan Saleamua got a reward from the federal government for being a whistleblower. After his retirement in 1998, he bought a chain of drug stores in the Kansas City area. A drug distribution company offered Saleaumua & his partner a $400,000 bribe to stock their products. After consultation with his attorney, a former federal prosecutor, he contacted the FDA & reported the bribery attempt. After some four years, the company, Cardinal Health of Ohio, was ordered to pay over $8 million in fines. Saleaumua & his partner were awarded $760,000 for doing the right thing.
Amani Toomer, besieged by an onslaught of very critical reporters, apologized for his remarks of yesterday when he said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's tactics were "Gestapo-like." Toomer said today:
"Obviously I didn't fully understand the meaning of what I said, I do now. It was a stupid, inappropriate & offensive thing to say. I apologize for my choice of words, I apologize to Commissioner Goodell for the offensive characterization."
I personally know two graduates of the University of Michigan, they're both very intelligent people, well spoken, thoughtful. I mistook Amani Toomer for the same type of person. I still believe he's an intelligent man, just not an honest one. You will never make me believe Toomer didn't know the meaning of what he said. He just didn't anticipate the backlash, that was his mistake, not what he said originally, he knew damn well how offensive bringing Gestapo references into the conversation would be. I spoke my mind on this subject yesterday, there isn't a worse comparison than Nazis, the KKK & their ilk. Stop using these horrific groups & political agendas in any reasonable conversation.
The lockout has produced more victims. Everyone below Commissioner Roger Goodell on the food chain will be taking a 12% pay cut until a new CBA is signed or August 1st. The August deadline will include layoffs at that time. Unlike the billionaire owners & millionaire players, a large segment of these workers make less than $100,000 & they are living in the Tri-State area, New York, New Jersey & Connecticut which can be very expensive. But who cares about them?
It was pointed out by the very astute folks over at Pro Football Talk that the new NFL, schedule just released on Tuesday, has a caveat that allows for weeks 2 & 4 to be canceled & not affect divisional play. If the lockout affects the regular season, weeks 2 & 4 would be eliminated, then the schedule would be week one, three, five, six etc. By not scheduling a single divisional game in week two or four, it allows a 14-game season with no interruption in divisional competition. Let's hope it doesn't come to this, but it's not surprising the league created a buffer just in case.
