QUICK TAKE ON CHIEFS' DAY 3 SELECTIONS

Day three of the NFL Draft is coming to a close, the Chiefs have used all of their assigned picks, so unless they trade a pick from the 2012 draft, they're all thru today. Thanks to the pigheaded lawyers leading the owners around by the nose, the lockout is back on & that means they'll be no signing of undrafted free agents. No big deal? Well there were 8 players at last January's Pro Bowl who were undrafted free agents. This really puts these kids behind the eight ball as well. They have no idea what the future will bring. Selfish, self-centered egotists who don't care about anyone but themselves have brought this mess down on us. Time for a reasonable group on both sides to put aside ego & get a new CBA hammered out ASAP.

Back to the Chiefs, here's my quick reaction to today's draft picks. I'll have more on them as well as a complete draft analysis no later than tomorrow.

4th Round - Jalil Brown - cornerback - Colorado
Good depth-type selection, he's not starting talent but you can't have enough good cornerbacks on any NFL roster.

Jalil Brown

5th Round pick I - Ricky Stanzi - quarterback - Iowa
Excellent pick, major upgrade from Brody Croyle. Arm isn't as good, but Stanzi's pocket presence & leadership is superior to Croyle. Maybe more importantly, he's a lot bigger & stronger, not brittle like Croyle.

Ricky Stanzi

5th Round pick II - Gabe Miller - defensive end - Oregon State
When I saw this on the screen my first reaction was "who the hell is Gabe Miller?" I saw the Beavers play 6 times last season & I had nothing on him. So I went to different data bases looking for information. Pro Football Weekly had nothing. Scouts Inc. at ESPN.com listed Miller as the 72nd best outside linebacker. He's a former tight end until midway thru his junior season. Not much to tell, except I thought it was pretty early to be picking special teams players.

Gabe Miller

6th Round - Jerrell Powe - nose tackle - Ole Miss
Excellent pick, a serious need for Romeo Crennell because both of his nose tackles are not under contract for the upcoming season. They might retain Shaun Smith, but Ron Edwards will be allowed to move on or retire. Powe's a biggun', 6'2" 335. His stamina isn't great so he needs some extensive training to get into better shape. Solid citizen who has won numerous awards for his courage & character.

Jerrell Powe

7th Round - Shane Bannon - fullback - Yale
Another guy very tough to find in any data base. Strictly a blocker, Bannon had only 2 carries in each of the past two seasons. He too is a biggun', 6'2" 268. Bannon did catch 13 passes as a senior for 122-yards but scouts say he doesn't look natural catching the ball. No clue how this pick will pan out this fall.

Shane Bannon

Mizzou's Andrew Gachkar just got picked by San Diego. The outside linebacker is the third Tiger to be drafted along with Aldon Smith & Blaine Gabbert, both selected in round one. ILB Luke Lambert, & corners Kevin Rutland & Carl Gettis are the remaining draft-eligible players from Mizzou. If they can get this lockout mess straightened out, all three should be signed as undrafted free agents so they can get their shot to make an NFL team this summer.
