WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 1 SNOTTY COMMENT, NO LABOR TALK TODAY, I PROMISE
The College Football Hall of Fame announced their 2011 class of 16 inductees today. Some of the highlights:
Lloyd Carr - former Michigan assistant, defensive coordinator & head coach for 28-years. Played football & baseball at Mizzou in the mid-60's.
Eddie George - 1995 Heisman Trophy winner as well as the Jim Brown, Doak Walker, Walter Camp awards & the Maxwell Trophy for his career at Ohio State.
Will Shields - Outland Trophy winner in 1992 while at Nebraska. Started 223 consecutive games for the Kansas City Chiefs where he was a 9-time first team All-Pro as well as the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year in 2003.
Deion Sanders - A truly great impact player on defense & special teams for the Florida State Seminoles. He should have been in before now.
Fisher DeBarry - Air Force assistant & head coach for 27-years. Won 169 games with Academy talent, no small accomplishment.
Rob Waldrop - lineman from the Arizona "Desert Storm" defense of '90-93, played next to Teddy Bruschi.
Bill "Earthquake" Enyart - Oregon State fullback from '66-68, Enyart once had 50 carries in one game for 299-yards.
Jake Scott - Georgia safety in 1968-69, later drafted by the Dolphins, Scott still holds the Bulldogs' record for career interceptions & return yardage. Excellent punt returner as well.
These honorees as well as the remaining 8, will be inducted during a ceremony in December.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have told HBO "Thanks, but no thanks." They don't want to be this season's team on the network series "Hard Knocks." Probably a smart move by Buc brass & head coach Raheem Morris. With nearly 1/5th of their roster having been arrested in the past 16-months, I'm thinking fewer distractions & not more, is the way to go in Tampa.
Speaking of the Bucs, their leading tackler for the past 4 seasons, middle linebacker Barrett Ruud, is stewing in his own juices right now, a victim of the uh, uh, I said I'm not going to talk about it & I'm not. Anyway, Ruud would have been an unrestricted free agent with a few teams willing to throw real money in his direction. The 6' 2" 242-pound ex-Cornhusker, picked in the 2nd round of the 2005 draft, Ruud would look good in a Chiefs' uniform playing next to Derrick Johnson, also picked in '05.
Former Titans' coach Jeff Fisher, ex-Pat Teddy Bruschi & former Eagle tight end Chad Lewis, along with 4 disabled American veterans began their ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro late yesterday. The group wants to raise awareness for the Wounded Warrior project, a very worthy cause. Two of the vets lost a leg, one an arm & the lone woman on the climb, is blind in one eye & deaf in one ear. Let's hope & pray all seven return safely. Kilimanjaro is a mere 19,314 feet to the summit.
It appears the Minnesota Vikings will be staying in Minnesota now that Ramsey County has agreed to partner with the NFL & the Vikings to build a new stadium in Arden Hills, about 12 miles from the Metrodome, the Vikes old home. It may or may not have a retractable roof, the $113 million needed for that option hasn't been accounted for as of yet, but the rest on the money needed to build it, $770 million, has been committed. For now, this is what it's supposed to look like complete with the roof.

Bill Belichick had this say yesterday, "It's obviously a whole big legal thing & these lawyers, they know everything." He was asked about the OTA's & mini camps his players were missing & he made it quite clear, unless this is settled within the next ten days, training camp will have to be expanded or the playbook contracted as there won't be sufficient time to get it completely installed. "Yes, the playbook will have to be trimmed back, maybe drastically" Belichick added. This coming from one of the smartest football minds on the planet, a coach with one of the sharpest quarterbacks in the league's history & a team with a superior coaching staff. Think of how this will affect teams with new head coaches, coordinators or scheme changes. Pretty tough to transition a team when the coaches & players can have no contact.
