HASSELBECK TO TITANS, CHIEFS SIGN #4 PICK, HOLMES TO STAY IN N.Y. & THE QUARTERBACK VERSION OF MUSICAL CHAIRS

As predicted here, Matt Hasselbeck will become a Tennessee Titan. The veteran quarterback agreed to terms with the Titans earlier this morning. He will most likely be the stop gap QB until rookie #1 pick Jake Locker is ready to take charge.

The Chiefs have agreed to terms with their #4 draft pick, Colorado cornerback Jalil Brown. Nose tackle Ron Edwards has officially become an ex-Chief. He & the Carolina Panthers got together on a 3-year deal worth just over $8 million. C'mon Scott Pioli, lets get Aubrayo Franklin to become our nose tackle.

Santonio Holmes has agreed to resign with the New York Jets. The 5-year deal will have $24 million in guaranteed money. The Jets are very serious about adding free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, the top free agent in this year's group. If they do manage to sign the all-pro, I'd say the chances of wide receivers Braylon Edwards & Brad Smith returning are about zero. Signing Asomugha would just about exhaust the Jets remaining cap money needed to sign Braylon Edwards. Can you say Randy Moss? Might happen with a 1-year deal.

The Cowboys need even more cap room if they are to become a part of the Asomugha derby. It's been reported QB Tony Romo, OLB DeMarcus Ware & WR Miles Austin have volunteered to restructure their current contracts in order to free up additional cap space.

Also in the Asomugha sweepstakes are the Houston Texans & a new entry, the San Francisco Forty-Niners. I think the Texans are a distant 4th in the race for the most coveted free agent this year. Asomugha played at Cal & in Oakland, so staying in the Bay Area might be attractive. The Niners have no cap issues, so look for them to make a serious run in this high-stakes showdown.

The Donovan McNabb to Minnesota deal is just about done. McNabb was unhappy after hearing the Vikes inquired about Tyler Thigpen before contacting Washington. Apparently they have soothed his bruised ego & restructured his deal, so look for this to get done within hours. The redskins will receive a 2012 6th round pick & a conditional 2013 6th round selection.

I've gotten several emails from Ram fans asking for a name or two as running back prospects to spell Steven Jackson. How about Reggie Bush? Or would you be happier with Darren Sproles? Last name, Joseph Addai. Good luck, the Rams need a solid change-of-pace back to carry 150 times & be part of the passing game. If it were me, I'd take Sproles, hands down.

Other players changing teams include WR Donte Stallworth, who will join the Redskins. Former Jets backup QB Kellen Clemens will take his visor & clipboard to Washington. The Redskins continue to baffle their fans & me as well. Taking a page from the Seahawks' QB strategy book, the Skins now have three career backups & no starter. Clemens joins Rex Grossman & John Beck, anyone get excited by that trio? Ex-Forty-Niner starting center will move across country to join the NY Giants who cut their starting center, Shaun O'Hara, just yesterday.

In undrafted free agent news, one of my favorites, cornerback Ryan Jones from NW Missouri State, will become a Chicago Bear. Mizzou center Tim Barnes will join the Baltimore Ravens & Tiger teammate Carl Gettis will try to become a cornerback for the Cleveland Browns. Another intriguing prospect, Marc Schiehl, a DE/OLB from Colorado School of Mines, will attempt to bring his furious pass rush to the NFL. This young man is the 2nd all-time sacker in NCAA history.

With Matt Hasselback landing in Nashville & Donovan McNabb on his way to Minneapolis, where will the remaining quarterbacks end up when the music stops? Here's my best guess:

Kevin Kolb will be traded to Arizona, period.

Kyle Orton will be traded to Miami, Washington might get involved, but Miami will be the winner. The biggest stumbling block in dealing Orton will be his contract, he's due $9 million this season, I doubt anyone will pay him close to that figure.

Vince Young will be released tomorrow before the Titans have to pay him a $4.5 million roster bonus. He will end up in Philadelphia backing up Michael Vick. Not the best scenario for Young, but he's somewhat limited at this point.

So what about Marc Bulger? How about Cincinnati? If that is what it comes down to, Bulger should seriously consider retirement.

Other QB notes;
The Cardinals should release former starter Derek Anderson today or tomorrow, he has very little future in the NFL.

Mike Brown's insistence on not trading quarterback Carson Palmer is hurting his team & making his fans very unhappy. Brown said yesterday "Carson Palmer has retired." He surmised that since Palmer followed up his threats of retiring if he wasn't traded. Not receiving anything for a quality quarterback is carrying things too far. You're hurting your own team. He said he doesn't want to allow players to demand trades in order to get out of Cincinnati. Mr. Brown, the fact that people continue to "get out of Cincinnati" is a problem your franchise has had for decades. You have to ask yourself why?

News that wasn't entirely unexpected, Ticketmaster announced yesterday their NFL ticket sales had skyrocketed 332%.

The Mountain West Conference has told Boise State no blue on blue on blue. In other words, the Broncos will not be allowed to wear their blue jerseys at home on their blue turf. I think this is a pretty chickensh*t deal, but Boise coach Chris Peterson, after much protesting, said they would comply. Several conference teams wanted the broncos to change back to a green playing surface, but when the school complained about the cost(well over $1 million) the MWC relented. Think that blue turf doesn't psych opponents out when they travel to Boise? Since installing it, the Broncos are 69-2 at home, 40-0 in WAC home games & they currently have a 32-game winning streak on the "smurf turf." Excellent coaching & some really good players had a lot to do with these numbers. But the blue turf is an advantage. My wife hates that field more than anything in college football.

Former Notre Dame coach Dan Devine will join other legendary Irish coaches this fall when a life-size bronze statue will be unveiled at Notre Dame Stadium. Since Devine was the only remaining former coach who won a national championship while coaching the Irish without a statue, the plan is to make that right. His likeness will join those of Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy, Ara Parshegian & Lou Holtz. Devine was also a legendary coach for Missouri from 1958 to 1970. His lifetime record as a head coach was 173-57-9. His 1977 Notre Dame team, led by quarterback Joe Montana, pounded the heavily favored Texas Longhorns 38-10 in the Cotton Bowl to win the mythical national championship. Devine, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, passed away in 1991.
