TAMBA SIGNS, FAIRLY'S FOOT SURGERY, RAMS GET A CADILLAC & BUBBA SMITH....R.I.P.
Chiefs fans were happy to hear Le'Ron McClain was signed late this afternoon but the news got even better late tonight. Kansas City & OLB Tamba Hali agreed to a new 5-year contract worth $60 million with $35 mil guaranteed. Hali led the AFC in sacks last season with 14.5. He has also forced 18 fumbles in his 5-year career with the Chiefs. This was a huge deal to get this guy signed long term. Brandon Carr is the only remaining restricted free agent I see the Chiefs signing, let's hope they get this deal done in time for Thursday afternoon's practice.
ESPN's John Clayton reported earlier this evening the Chiefs brought running back Jason Snelling in for a look-see before signing Le'Ron McClain. With that knowledge, it appears they are intent on cutting Thomas Jones' carries considerably or maybe even altogether. Jones ran out of steam about midway thru last season. Jones will turn 33 in two weeks, McClain or Snelling are much younger & have a lot less wear & tear than Jones.
Also practicing for the first time on Thursday, Jon McGraw, Terrence Copper, Travis Daniels, Wallace Gilberry, plus newly acquired free agents Kelly Gregg, Brandon Siler, Le'Ron McClain & Steve Breaston.
Kansas City also signed two more undrafted free agents, safeties Javes Lewis from Oregon & Carson Newman's Mario Russell. Tony Moeaki continues to be listed as physically unable to perform(PUP). Third round draft pick, linebacker Justin Houston, continues to miss important practice time because he is one of only 4 unsigned selections from April's draft. Mum continues to be the operative word regarding Houston's absence.
According to Bob Gretz, undrafted free agent tackle David Mims drew the wrath of Todd Haley during tonight's practice. Gretz said Mims committed a false start on a first & goal snap from the 5-yardline. This caused Haley to stop everything & go into a 5-minute lecture about mistakes in the redzone. I like Mims, let's hope he does better tomorrow.
Herm Edwards may not be the lamest talking head on ESPN for long. The "Worldwide Leader in Sports" signed former Jets & Browns head coach Eric Mangini to wow us with his boring commentary.
The Rams signed running back Cadillac Williams to serve as Steven Jackson's backup. Williams has suffered ruptured patellar tendons in both knees since he was drafted #5 overall in 2005 by Tampa Bay. If he's healthy, this is a good move for the Rams as Williams is a good pass receiver as well as a solid, tho unspectacular, runner at this point in his career.I have to believe he's nearly 100%, the Rams passed on other running backs with healthier history's.

New Ram Cadillac Williams
Former Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard signed with Baltimore tonight. He was released by Kansas City soon after Todd Haley arrived on the scene, but played the past two seasons for the Houston Texans. He's been a starter the last four seasons.
Lions rookie defensive tackle, Nick Fairly, underwent foot surgery this afternoon for an injury he suffered on Monday. According to Detroit sources, Detroit's first round draft pick "will miss a significant portion of training camp."
I told you about a restaurant fight that involved members of Braylon Edwards' entourage. Sunday night two of his guys got into it with two restaurant workers, one suffering from a knife wound that required 14-stitches to close. Edwards proudly Tweeted about how tough he was. But the next day he claimed his phone was stolen & his Twitter account had been hacked. He said he had nothing to do with the altercation. One of the people involved in breaking up the fight was ESPN analyst & former Michigan alum, Jalen Rose. The story he gave police, along with other witnesses, doesn't back up Edwards' version of what happened. Go figure. The police made it clear late Wednesday a complete investigation was still underway & charges could be filed against several people who were reported to be right in the middle of everything. His free agent value continues shrinking.
The new CBA will now be voted on by the players today. A simple majority is all it takes to approve it.
"More taste, less filling" was the commercial line from the 1970's when Lite/Light beer burst on the scene. Many of those early commercial spots featured former Baltimore Colts' defensive end Bubba Smith, Dick Butkus, Billy Martin & Rodney Dangerfield arguing over which was more important in a beer. Bubba Smith passed away in his Los Angeles home on Wednesday. He was 66. After a 9-year NFL career, Smith became an actor, doing Miller Lite commercials for nearly a decade plus the multi-picutre Police Academy films, Married With Children & numerous other TV pilots. No cause of death was determined, but authorities believe he died of natural causes.
