NCAA SUSPENDS 8 HURRICANES, CHIEFS KICKOFF PARTY A DUD & A BIT OF A GLOSSARY

The NCAA has spoken, the Miami suspensions are official now, eight in all. Suspended for the opening game Monday vs. Maryland is QB Jacory Harris, WR Travis Benjamin, DT Marcus Forston, DE Adewale Ojomo & LB Sean Spence, all starters. TE Dyron Dye & S RayRay Armstrong will sit for 4 games & DE Olivier Vernon was suspended for 6 games. According to the NCAA investigation, these players received at least $100 in improper benefits, the three players suspended for longer received more benefits. The remaining four players who were accused in the investigation were found to have accepted less than $100, which is forgivable as long as the money is repaid in the form of a charitable donation.

The Tennessee Titans appear to be closer to offering RB Chris Johnson a contract he can live with. The Forty-Niners made RB Frank Gore happy on Tuesday when they game him a 3-year contract extension worth $21 million, $13.5 million guaranteed. With the $4.9 million Gore will receive this season, his contract is now worth $18.4 million guaranteed & Frank's a happy man.

The Niners also took WR Michael Crabtree off the PUP list & he will begin practicing on a very limited basis. He had re-injured the same foot that's bothered him off & on for 2-years. In other injury news, Cleveland will lose guard Eric Steinbach for the season because of back problems that may require surgery. This is a major loss for the Browns & QB Colt McCoy. Seattle placed starting tight end John Carlson on injured reserve after he suffered a torn labrum.

The Chiefs placed offensive tackle Ryan O'Callaghan on injured reserve & he will miss the entire 2011 season. No details about his injuries have ever been released by the Chiefs. LOG Ryan Lilja remains sidelined with an unknown injury. He hasn't practiced in a week.

The details on Michael Vick's new contract were revised, it's worth $80 million, $35.5 million of it guaranteed. I still question Vick's durability over the long haul.

Virginia Tech auditioned a female placekicker on Monday. Coach Frank Beamer said it was too close to the season opener to have a wide open kicking competition, but he invited freshman Lauren Luttrell back for spring practices. The young lady from Spotsylvania, Virginia was a co-kicker her senior year in high school kicking 10 PAT's & a longest field goal of 31-yards.

San Diego released David Binn, who had been with the team for 17-years. Never heard of him? Like I said on the radio last week, long snapper is almost anonymous & you make great money. With 17-years of service with the team, Binn has been earning a 7-figure salary for nearly 10-years. Kendall Gammon spent 15-years in the NFL, strictly as a long snapper, playing for Pittsburgh, New Orleans & his last 7 seasons with Kansas City. The reason San Diego cut Binn is the same reason Gammon was released. He made too much money for what he did. Otherwise Gammon could easily still be making perfect snaps for the Chiefs.

The "Chiefs Kickoff Party" Monday evening in the Power & Light District was really a dud. Just like the heavily promoted "Back to Football Bash" held last Wednesday at Arrowhead, Chiefs fans didn't respond. It looked as tho fewer than 300 people attended the event.
