ROOKIE QB REPORT, ALDON SMITH GOES OFF, A NEW CARSON PALMER RUMOR & RANKED TEAMS ROLL BIG
The 2011 rookie quarterback class put in a lot of time tonight, most played at least a full quarter, others a half. Tennessee's Jake Locker, Minnesota's Christian Ponder, Jacksonville's Blaine Gabbert & Carolina's Cam Newton all played pretty well. Yes they faced mostly 2nd & 3rd teamers, but they were surrounded by 2nd & 3rd teamers on their side as well. Gabbert went 9 of 18 for 132-yards, but his receivers clearly dropped three passes. Cincinnati's Andy Dalton played so-so in a limited appearance but San Francisco's Colin Kaepernick was dreadful, throwing 2 horrible picks in his first 4 passes. Even worse, Baltimore's Tyrod Taylor, who had played well this preseason, suffered what appeared to be a pretty bad shoulder injury. The Jets Greg McElroy sustained a thumb injury of some sort & left the game.
In other quarterback news, Philadelphia's Vince Young was having a fine outing completing 15 of 23 for 193-yards & a touchdown. But just before half, Young was rolling out, went down grabbing his hamstring & limped off the field. He went straight to the locker room.
Remember last week's supplemental draft? Only one prospect,Terrelle Pryor, was selected. I thought Georgia running back Caleb King would've been drafted, but he wasn't. The Minnesota Vikings signed King as an undrafted free agent. He practiced for 4-5 days & played tonight. King led the Vikes in rushing with 62-yards & he scored 2 touchdowns. He just might make that roster.
With only 2 days rest, the New York Giants rested every single starter tonight. With their #2's & 3's, the G-Men beat New England 18-17. The Giant defense recorded 8 sacks, 9 tackles for loss & 7 other QB hits. Some of this was done against Tom Brady & the Patriots' #1 teams. This is the 2nd game in a row New England has been pushed around & dominated physically. The Jets beat them twice with that gameplan last season & now those who are capable of playing a rough-tough style of defense have shown it can be done this year too.
Forty-Niner #1 draft pick, Aldon Smith, proved tonight why San Francisco took him with the 7th overall pick in last April's draft. Against the Chargers, Smith had 7 tackles, 2 for loss, 2.5 sacks, 4 other QB hits & he forced a fumble. Smith was a feared pass rusher in the the Big-12 while at Missouri, but this was quite a performance.
ESPN's Bob Holtzman reported this evening Cincy QB holdout, Carson Palmer, had met with team owner Mike Brown in late July. Holtzman also reported Palmer may be headed back to the Bengals, forcing them to pay & play($11.5 mil.), trade or release him. I have serious doubts about this report, I don't see Palmer coming in after making such a big deal about being traded & Mike Brown is one of the most stubborn owners in the league.
The Wisconsin Badgers rolled all over UNLV tonight at Camp Randall, 51-17. It wasn't even that close. Transfer QB Russell Wilson made quite a home debut rushing twice for 62-yards including a 46-yard touchdown run. He completed 10 of 13 for 255-yards & 2 touchdowns. The Badgers lost a number of offensive players to the NFL this past spring, but Wilson & company didn't seem to miss a beat.
Mississippi State run up 645-yards of total offense on the way to a 59-14 beatdown of Memphis. Running back Vick Ballard had 10 carries for 166-yards & 3 touchdowns including 46 & 66-yard scores.
Tulsa's total yardage leader, Damaris Johnson, was arrested & charged with felony embezzlement. His girlfriend was also charged. Seems the enterprising couple used her employee discount at Macy's to make off with over $2,800 worth of merchandise while paying just $13 cash. The perfect crime? Not really, it took store security about half a day to reconstruct what transpired & to notify Tulsa Police. Johnson scored 13 TD's for Tulsa last season running, receiving & returning kicks & punts. He has been suspended indefinitely from the Golden Hurricane program.
