CHIEFS PRACTICE SQUAD, MORE SUNDAY NFL TRANSACTIONS & ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREATS PASSES AWAY

The Chiefs filled up their practice squad with 8 names that weren't a big surprise. Offensive linemen Darryl Harris, Butch Lewis & David Mims were selected. Defensive lineman Anthony Toribio, linebacker Justin Cole, cornerback Quinten Lawrence, wide receiver Jeremy Horne & fullback Shane Bannon filled out the 8-man squad.

In other NFL transactions 5-time Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode, cut by Dallas last week, was signed Sunday by the Ravens as insurance for 35-year old Matt Birk.

The Jets cut Aaron Maybin, former #1 pick of the Bills, to make room for Mardy Gilyard, wide receiver & kick returner. New York also placed quarterback Greg McElroy on injured reserve after he fractured his right thumb Thursday night.

Chester Taylor, once one of the best 3rd down backs in football, was cut by the Chicago Bears one year after they signed him to a lucrative free agent contract. Taylor & Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz never saw eye to eye, so Chicago decided to cut their losses & released him. The Arizona Cardinals stepped up quickly today to sign Taylor. The bears signed a big name of their own when they claimed former New England Pro Bowl safety Brandon Meriweather.

Another ex-Patriot, wide receiver & kick returner Brandon Tate, was claimed by Cincinnati. To make a roster spot available for Tate, the Bengals released former Mizzou tight end, Chase Coffman. Could the Chiefs bring him in for a look-see? He certainly fills the bill of a tall pass catcher with good hands. I just can't see Kansas City going thru the entire season with 3 tight ends that are essentially all the same, blockers who might catch a pass from time to time. Both Jake O'Connell & Leonard Pope earn to many penalty flags too. Just a thought.

How bad was Josh McDaniels drafting ability? He had two #1's & three #2's in the 2010 draft. All three #2's are gone now, TE Richard Quinn was waived last week, CB Alphonso Smith(who McDaniels traded a 1st round draft pick for) was traded for a 4th round pick & today the Broncos cut safety Darcell McBath. With RB Knowshon Moreno & QB Tim Tebow barely hanging onto their roster spots, this was a dreadful waste of premium draft picks.

Carolina traded a 2010 first round pick for a 2009 second round pick so they could grab defensive end Everrette Brown. The Panthers cut Ev today.

It is with a very heavy heart I have to tell you Lee Roy Selmon passed away this afternoon in Tampa. The 56-year old Selmon suffered a stroke Friday afternoon. Local TV stations reported Friday evening Selmon had died, but his brother Dewey, in an emotional statement, said his younger sibling was "alive & fighting for his life." This morning Dewey thanked people for their prayers & said Lee Roy was improving but later this afternoon he passed away. He was voted the #1 player in Tampa Buccaneer history. He was inducted to the Oklahoma, College & Pro Football Halls of Fame. His 7 Florida restaurant/sports bars were always mentioned as a top-10 chain in the entire country. There's even a freeway in Tampa known as the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway.

Lee Roy was the third Selmon brother to play for Oklahoma, following Lucious & Dewey to fame in Norman, they played side-by-side-by-side one season. He won the Lombardi & Outland trophies, two National Championships with OU & was the first player ever drafted by Tampa bay after they entered the league as an expansion team in 1976. He was also the first player selected in that draft. In nine season for the Bucs, Selmon was selected for 6 Pro Bowls & recorded 78.5 sacks. He was the 1979 NFL Defensive Player of the Year & his #63 was retired by the Bucs.

As I said Friday night, Selmon was always one of my favorite players of all-time. He was everything you would want in a sports hero. He was first of all, an all-time great player at his position. He maintained a high level of excellence for his entire 9-year career & he was a giant in his community.

The tag line for his restaurant chain was perfect for this "Gentle Giant."

"Play hard, eat well & don't forget to share."

Sad to hear about Selmon, he was a great one. In the late 1970s, my dad was stationed in Florida & one time he took me and my brother to a personal appearance by Lee Roy Selmon. He was super nice & shook hands with us after signing our football cards. In 2004, I was stationed in Florida and his sports bar became a favorite place to eat and watch a game. Your right, he was a great one.

Huge Selmon fan, he was a God in Oklahoma too. Does he hold the sack record for a 3-4 defensive lineman? I'm bettin' he does?
