MOEAKI TO INJURED RESERVE AS THE CHIEFS CUT THEIR ROSTER TO 53 PLUS OTHER NFL CUTS & COMMENTS
Sixteen months ago I wrote on this here blog about the fragility of newly drafted tight end Tony Moeaki. Well I was chastised, criticized & ostracized for suggesting Moeaki might, just might, have an injury past that shouldn't be ignored. I also said then, I wanted desperately to be wrong about Moeaki, but this type of thing just doesn't go away. The Chiefs placed the promising tight end on injured reserve Saturday, ending his 2011 season before it began. With Leonard Pope, Jake O'Connell & Anthony Becht, the Chiefs have 3 tight ends that are much better blockers than pass receivers. This will alter what they can gameplan every single week of the season. Rookie linebacker Gabe Miller was also placed on I.R., he hadn't practiced since injuring his hamstring early in camp.
Also cut on Saturday were:
FB Shane Bannon
FB Mike Cox
WR Jeremy Horne
WR Zeke Markshausen
WR Verran Tucker
TE Charlie Gant
TE Cody Slate
G Darryl Harris
G Chris Harr
OT Mike Ingersoll
OT Butch Lewis
OT David Mims
DE Bobby Greenwood
DE Dion Gales
NT Anthony Toribio
DE Luke Patterson
LB Justin Cole
LB Micah Johnson
LB Pierre Walters
CB Quinten Lawrence
CB Ricky Price
CB Demond Washington
S Reshard Langford
Roster surprises for me were Mike Battle making the team as strictly a special teams player, 5th string RB's don't get any carries. Rookie DE Brandon Bair seemed like a shoe-in for the practice squad, but not the 53-man roster, he's just too far away from being NFL-ready. Keeping only seven offensive linemen will have to change, expect shuffling very soon to expand that number. I was very surprised rookie free agent Butch Lewis didn't make the roster, I thought he played pretty well in the preseason games. Hopefully he & fellow rookie tackle, David Mims will be stashed on the practice squad. Terrence Copper making the squad over Verran Tucker must have been a Mike Battle-like move, it had to be strictly special teams-driven, Copper dropped too many passes in the preseason. We're going to know come Thursday what is causing Ryan Lilja to miss practice & 2 games because the regular season has the weekly injury list. No way to ignore the media, the league, in it's desire to get the best possible information out there for gamblers(think I wouldn't tell the truth?), forces each team to divulge their injuries.
Former Chiefs guard Brian Waters was in Foxboro Saturday, discussing a contract & this morning they agreed upon a deal to make Waters a Patriot.
Larry Johnson was cut by the Dolphins, Rudy Niswanger by the Lions & Tank Tyler by the Bears.
St. Louis had a logjam at wide receiver, no more. They released Donnie Avery & Mardy Gilyard. Recently resigned WR Mark Clayton was placed on the PUP list, making him unavailable until after week 6.
Other PUP list players from around the NFL include Cincy's Adam "Pacman" Jones, Eagles 2010 #1 pick DE Brandon Graham, Patriots running back Kevin Faulk & nose tackle Ron Brace.
The Eagles reached an injury settlement with tackle Ryan Harris & released him. Cincinnati placed tight end Bo Scaife on I.R. & guard Bobby Williams was suspended for 4-weeks for violating the leagues policy of performance enhancing drugs.
New England cut 2-time Pro Bowl safety Brandon Meriweather. They also released wide receiver Brandon Tate, their primary kick returner. Veteran running back Sammy Morris was also cut on Saturday.
Dallas released defensive end Igor Olshansky, a 7-year starter for the Chargers & Dallas. The Bears dumped 2010 free agent running back Chester Taylor former Bear, defensive tackle Tommy Harris, failed in his bid to make the Colts roster. I thought he played well in the two games I saw, but Harris has a shaky history of poor practice habits & underachieving on Sundays when he's not in the mood.
Remember Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Terrelle Pryor for 5-games after he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the supplemental draft? Now the question has come up regarding new Colts employee, Jim Tressel. Should he be suspended just like Pryor since their antics & lies caused all of the current mess at Ohio State? Stay tuned, it's possible a new replay review consultant could be suspended.
