CASSEL PRACTICES, PEYTON "DOUBTFUL" & TRESSEL'S NFL DEBUT DELAYED 6 GAMES
Matt Cassel was in pads this morning for practice. Randy Covitz of the Kansas City Star reports the injured QB didn't participate in any of the stretching exercises but he did make a few short throws before the media was kicked out of the practice session. Can he play with a cracked rib? Yes, but it could worsen the injury, he can even take a shot to deaden the area before the game, so he just might play. If the rib is broken, I don't see any way he could play, just too dangerous. He could puncture a lung.
Peyton Manning won't play Sunday & he might not be playing anytime soon. The Colts admitted today he would be listed as doubtful on the injury report. He has not been cleared by team doctors to practice at full speed. The word out of Colts camp is Manning's back began bothering him over the weekend so badly he couldn't participate in anything practice or conditioning-wise. In their statement, the Colts said "this is a complicated neurological recovery, the end date of which is unpredictable." When asked today about the report the QB would need another procedure on his neck, team president Bill Polian said "I don't know anything about that." No denial, just plead ignorance. I think Peyton is worse than they're letting on, he may miss significant time this season. Without him, I don't like their chances to hold off Houston for the division crown.
The Colts got another dose of bad news when newly hired "replay review consultant" Jim Tressel was told by the league office he would not be allowed to work with the team until week 7 of the regular season. Looks like they gave him one more week of suspension than his old Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor.
Peter King of Sports Illustrated said today about Lee Roy Selmon:
"How many players were regarded as the best ever in the history of their college program & the best ever player for a professional franchise?"
I agree completely, Oklahoma has a number of great players to consider, but Selmon would be my pick. When it comes to Tampa bay, there's no question, he's the only Buc inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
