JET CUT CAUGHT DRIVING 147 MPH, PRIME MATCHUPS THIS WEEKEND, A CORRECTION & DID YOU SEE MARYLAND'S UNIS TONIGHT?
Chris Jennings was a running back for the New York Jets until Saturday afternoon when the team released him in the final camp cutdown. There's no doubt being told to "come to the coach's office & bring your playbook" on cutdown day is as traumatic as it gets for NFL hopefuls. It's a dream crusher to be sure. But that said, it doesn't allow you to hurtle down an Ohio highway at 147 MPH! This might be a new NFL record for speeding, but does it count since he was cut prior to his record performance? This genius had the good sense to attempt this shot at the record even tho his car had expired plates & his driver's license was suspended. No way right? Yes, this is all true, the Ohio Highway Patrol took Mr. Jennings into custody to no one's surprise. But he bonded right out & was gone down the highway, this time well within the 65 MPH speed limit.
There's a slew of prime games for your viewing pleasure beginning Thursday night. Arizona visits Stillwater Oklahoma to play the Cowboys. This game should be a shootout, you can see it on ESPN at 7PM CDT. Also on Thursday we have the NFL opener, New Orleans at defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay. Then on Friday night, Mizzou travels out to Tempe to play Arizona State. The Tigers have a 22-game non-conference winning streak. With the injuries they've sustained, this will be a tall order for Gary Pinkel's team. This game can be seen on ESPN at 9:30PM CDT. Other great matchups this weekend include;
Saturday
#20 Mississippi State at #23 Auburn-both teams need a solid performance.
#2 Alabama at Penn State-Tide should roll, but JoePa's Lions could surprise.
#12 South Carolina at Georgia-already a must game for Dawgs after Boise beatdown.
Brigham Young at Texas-tough scehdule for BYU, beat Miss. State on road last week
Utah at #19 USC-welcome to the PAC-12 for the Utes.
Sunday
Atlanta at Chicago-can Bears rebound from playoff disappointment?
Philadelphia at St. Louis-could be a "statement game" for the Rams.
Pittsburgh at Baltimore-quickly developing into the best rivalry in the league.
Indianapolis at Houston-No Manning means absolute must-win for Texans.
Dallas at NY Jets-Sunday night game matches the Ryan twins Rex & Rob.
Not if you paid me-Seattle at San Francisco
"I'm good, I'm ready to go." So said Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel Monday after he participated in practice. Exactly what he did & how hard he could go isn't known, the shroud of secrecy doesn't allow any information to seep out of the Arrowhead fortress. Considering Cassel played 11-days after an emergency appendectomy last year, I expect him to play if the rib isn't broken. Still no word on guard Ryan Lilja's condition or what his injury actually is. They picked up an offensive tackle, Steve Maneri, from the waiver wire. I'll give you one guess where Maneri played last? If you guessed New England you'd be right, what a surprise huh? To make roster space for Maneri, the Chiefs cut veteran tight end Anthony Becht, leaving them with just 2 tight ends & one of them, Jake O'Connell, is injured. Don't ask me, I don't get it either.
Earlier today I said the NFL had asked the Colts to bar Jim Tressel from his new job for 6 weeks. He won't begin his duties as Indy's "replay review consultant" for 6 weeks, but it was a decision that was reached between the Colts & Tressel, the NFL had nothing to do with it.
Before I get into my uniform rant, I want to take time to wish my Mom a very happy 83rd birthday today. She's always been a huge sports fan, just like her Mom. She always listens to the radio show on the internet & prints every post I've ever written here, that's 1,022 articles. For my sisters & myself, she's always been in our corner, supporting us all the way. Have a nice day Mom, love you.
Thanks to Rance Burger, sportswriter extraordinaire, for doing the radio show with me tonight, it was fun. I hope you'll come back as soon & as often as you want. You're always welcome.
If you watched the Miami-Maryland game Monday evening, you saw a Miami team, riddled with suspensions & distraction, compete with a chance to win the game until the final minute. I was very impressed with the effort new Hurricanes coach Al Golden's team put forth all evening. The other thing you saw was the latest entry into the "Project Runway" nightmare, or maybe it was a Lady Gaga reject. What Nike & Under Armor are doing to college football is making me ill. Is it change for the sake of change or is it change for the better? I'm a believer in the former. If you didn't see the game, feast your eyes on these beauties, fashioned after the Maryland state flag.

The half & half helmet is nice isn't it? The inspiration
Nice eh? These unis beat out the Power Ranger outfits Nike had the Georgia Bulldogs wear Saturday night. I told you Nike had plans for the Chiefs next year when they become the NFL's official uniform provider. Tell me what you think.

If this doesn't scare you, here's the alternate choice;

Don't laugh non-Chiefs fans, Nike has designed two new uniforms for every NFL team. I rest my case, is all this uniform redesigning appeal to you?
