MANNING GONE FOR "A WHILE," CHIEFS SIGN A TE & COWBOYS MOST VALUABLE
Colts owner Jim Irsay said it all in his Tweet when he said "18 willbgone for a while." It appears quarterback Peyton Manning will undergo another procedure on his ailing neck. That would mean he will miss significant time, at least 4-6 weeks. Can Kerry Collins fill in well enough to keep Indy competitive? The AFC South isn't the best division, so it's possible. With Houston, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Kansas City, New Orleans & Atlanta in the Colts first 8 games, if he misses more than 4 weeks, I think it's going to be near impossible to make the playoffs.
UPDATE @ 2:20PM CDT--ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting Peyton Manning underwent surgery for cervical fusion. He will be out 2-3 months at the minimum.
I told you the Saints would be without Lance Moore, their 2nd leading receiver, for tonight's game in Green Bay. They will also be playing without their leading sacker, defensive end Will Smith, who is sidelined by a 2-game suspension from the StarCaps case. A banned ingredient in a nutritional supplement caused four NFL players to be suspended. Smith has lead New Orleans in sacks 4 of the past 6 seasons.
The NFL, in addition to a weekend of free Redzone channel, they will also provide a free preview of the NFL Network thru Monday to all cable & satellite customers. Directv subscribers will also receive a free weekend of NFL Sunday Ticket which allows you to see every NFL game played Sunday.
Looks like running back Marion Barber will miss the Bears' season opener because of a calf injury. The new York Giants, after working out Kawika Mitchell & Chase Blackburn, will promote rookie Greg Jones into the starting middle linebacker spot. Jones, a 6th round draft pick out of Michigan State, moves into the all-important defensive spot to replace Jonathan Goff, who was placed on I.R. with a torn ACL.
ESPN & the NFL have announced they have extended their Monday Night Football pact thru the 2021 season. The league will reap $1.8 billion for the deal. That slightly more than $105 million per game. That's an increase of 63% over the last contract with the "Worldwide leader in Sports." Not a bad rebound from the lockout huh?
The Chiefs signed tight end Kyle Nelson & placed him on the practice squad. To make room for Nelson, Kansas City released offensive lineman Butch Lewis. That leaves OT David Mims & G Darryl Harris on the practice squad. Personally, I thought Lewis was the best of the three & was the only one who could play both guard & tackle. But what do I know, 'Pialey' is the genius right? Nelson was signed as an undrafted free agent out of New Mexico State by New Orleans. He caught 66 passes for 559-yards & 2 touchdowns in 50 games during his college career. Honestly, the guy has never been on my radar. He's smallish at 6' 2" & 240. The Chiefs still have Leonard Pope & a nicked up Jake O'Connell as the only 2 TE's on the active roster.
The Missouri Tigers are a 7.5 point underdog tomorrow night at Arizona State. The biggest matchup in this game is the Tiger O-line vs. Sun Devil middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict. He has been compared to Ray Lewis & I think that's an apt comparison. He's big at 6' 2" & 254, runs sideline to sideline & hits like a bomb. He's one of those guys that jump off the screen when you watch ASU.

ASU wrecking ball, Vontaze Burfict
Joe Flacco is 2-7 versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, but 0-7 against them when Ben Rothlisberger starts.
Sunday's ugliest game of the day is without question, but it holds some interest for me since it will be a rematch of the head coaches. Pete Carroll & Jim harbaugh last met when the pair was coaching at USC & Stanford respectively. The Cardinal pounded the Trojans 55-21 at the L.A. Coliseum. Harbaugh even had his team go for a 2-point conversion late in the 4th quarter. Carroll was livid & when he met Harbaugh at midfield after the massacre, he said "what's your deal?" Harbaugh's reply was "what's your deal?" Funny how the big boys who run up the score on team after team, year after year, don't like it when one of their sheered sheep rises up & gets some payback.
Forbes Magazine came out with their rankings of what each NFL franchise is worth. The Dallas Cowboys are said to be worth $1.85 billion, making them number 1. The Chiefs rank 18th at a mere $986 million. That places them ahead of New Orleans, Cleveland, San Diego, Atlanta, Minnesota, St. Louis & the Raiders, to name a few. Jacksonville is last on the list at $725 million.
