PINKEL "ICES" HIS OWN KICKER IN O.T. LOSS, PRYOR GOES BACK ON HIS WORD & I WAS WRONG, PLAXICO HASN'T MATURED AT ALL

I saw something tonight I had never seen in a football game, a coach "icing" his own placekicker. You know when an opposing coach calls timeout a split second before the other kicker attempts a field goal to win the game? But have you ever seen a coach call a timeout before his own kicker attempts the winning field goal? How about back-to-back timeouts? You know I could maybe understood the first one, Tiger kicker Grant Ressel was rocking back & forth, heel to toe, something I had never seen him do. I think Gary Pinkel saw it too & he called a timeout. But the second timeout, I just can't figure. Naturally, after standing around thru 2 timeouts, Ressel pulled his kick slightly left, putting the game into overtime. I think if you're counting on him making a 48-yard field goal on the road to win, it's not the best strategy, but Pinkel really compounded the problem by calling 2 timeouts & that ladies & gentlemen, is just plain stupid. Since the game ended in the middle of the night back here in Tiger country, I have no place to find comments from Pinkel on ESPN or the internet.

I told Linda right then, Arizona State was going to win. Before the 2 timeouts, ASU was  absolutely beat, Dennis Erickson's team knew it & so did the Sun Devil fans. It was over, they let the Tigers mount a furious 4th quarter comeback, scoring 14-points to tie it & with the field goal, the Sun Devils would once again go home winless against a top-25 ranked team. But the back-to-back timeouts called by the Mizzou coach, almost insured the missed field goal & an overtime loss. I welcome his explanation.

QB James Franklin was very shaky to very good, he's definitely a work in progress. But in the end, he got his team into position to win the game in regulation. After it went to overtime, he reverted back to very shaky & mercifully, it ended in 4 snaps.

Three glaring problems Tiger coaches must face as soon as they board the plane home to Columbia. One, running back De'Vion Moore sustained an ankle sprain on his only carry. That left the already strapped Tigers with one healthy tailback, Henry Josey & after a 39-yard run in the waning minutes of the game, he came up lame. Lumbering, 250-pound fullback Jared Culver was their only able-bodied ballcarrier other than Franklin. It also made it very easy for the ASU defense to figure out who would be carrying the ball, Franklin. After reaching the ASU 30 on back-to-back runs by Franklin, two incomplete passes forced the field goal from there.

Problem #2 is without Jacquies Smith(dislocated elbow), the Tigers couldn't mount much of a pass rush. This gave Sun Devil QB Brock Osweiler too much time to find an open man. He destroyed the Tiger corners, which is problem #3, completing 24 of 32 for 353-yards & 3 scores. WR Jared Miles also threw a touchdown pass for ASU on an end around gadget play. Fellow WR Aaron Pflugrad caught 8 passes for 180-yards & 2 touchdowns. No pass rush + poor corner play = 388 yds passing & 4 TD's.

Mizzou free safety Matt White dropped a sure interception, even worse, the Tigers committed 11 penalties for 114-yards. ASU was flagged 12 times themselves for 110-yards,  it was a sloppy game. The worst part of watching the game referee call out 23 penalties, was his radio was cutting out, so we never heard the entire call. This started with the very first penalty & continued into the overtime, talk about annoying.

Josey ran for 94-yards on just 9 carries & Franklin added 84, the Tigers had 501 total yards. They didn't commit a turnover, but they struggled all night long. Fortunately for the Sun Devils, Gary Pinkel figured out a way to give them new hope & crush his own team at the same time.

PAC-12 Commisioner Larry Scott was interviewed at halftime of the Mizzou-ASU game & when asked about expansion, Scott said they have not approached anyone to join their conference because they aren't looking to expand. "The ink on the the new PAC-12 logo isn't even dry, we aren't taking to anyone about making our league any larger" Scott said. We'll see, sadly the soap opera that is the BIG-12 Conference continues.

In NFL injury news, New Orleans wide receiver Marques Colston sustained a broken collarbone in the Saints' final drive Thursday night. He will be lost for a minimum of 4-weeks. Both Dallas corners were injured & it doesn't look good for Sunday night. Terrence Newman is out with a groin pull & Mike Jenkins is questionable with a knee sprain. Texans' running back Arian Foster did not practice on Friday & even tho coach Gary Kubiak is calling Foster "a game time decision" I seriously doubt he will play. Sorry fantasy footballers. Chiefs fans won't be happy to hear OT Jared Gaither wasn't able to practice on Friday, his sore right knee heavily wrapped. If he can't go on Sunday, Todd Haley is left with newly acquired Steve Maneri as the only backup offensive tackle. He joined the team on Tuesday, how much of the playbook do you think he's digested?

The NFL has decided to allow any player to wear red, white & blue gloves & shoes on Sunday, the 10-year remembrance of 9/11. Chiefs' running back Jamal Charles has the shoes & gloves already in his locker & intends to wear them proudly. The gloves have "Never Forget" printed on the backs & Charles said "I will never forget." A flyover of four A-10's will be part of the pregame ceremonies. The Chiefs will also honor long time broadcaster Bill Grigsby & band leader Tony DiPardo, both having passed away this year.

Remember when Terrelle Pryor said he wouldn't appeal Roger Goodell's 5-game suspension? Then he said he would, then he said he wouldn't? Agent Drew Rosenhaus said Friday Pryor wanted to appeal the suspension. The NFLPA hasn't submitted any paperwork for an appeal since Rosenhaus & Pryor have proven to be somewhat wishy-washy on the subject of suspensions. This kid is a flake & his agent is a lying parasite.

I touted Plaxico Burress when he got out of jail. I figured he still had enough tread on the tires to play one or two more seasons. I knew he needed the money & figured he would be a model citizen while trying to reclaim an NFL career. I was wrong. He's still the self-centered, whiny, clueless immature jerk he always was. In an interview for Men's Journal, Plax threw former coach Tom Coughlin under the bus, QB Eli Manning, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg & finally, any fans who were critical of him.

According to Plax, Coughlin wasn't a sympathetic figure. When he was released from the hospital, he saw Coughlin on TV saying he was "sad & disappointed." Burress is quoted as saying "I'm like forget support, how about some sympathy, I did just have a bullet in my leg." When he finally met with Coughlin in his office, the coach said "well at least you didn't kill anybody." To which Burress told Men's Journal "man we're too old to be treated like kids, he doesn't realize we're old enough to have our own kids."

He is angry Manning & Coughlin didn't visit him in jail. "not one visit, no letter, nothing the whole time I was in there." I guess it would be fair to say at this point Tony Dungy didn't visit Burress either & he went to Leavenworth twice to visit Michael Vick. Know why? Because Vick was contrite, he took responsibility for what he had done. He apologized numerous times. Plax never did, because it's all about him, he's the victim. He takes an unregistered handgun into a crowded Manhattan night club. The gun, which has a round chambered & the safety off, discharges, blowing a hole in his thigh. But his incarceration is the Mayor's fault, "he didn't have to do that, but he was looking to make an example out of somebody famous & I was it."

Yeah, Plax, those ultra-strict gun laws in Manhattan that have been on the books for years are for everybody else, you're special so you don't have to adhere to them. To the fans who "were happy I went to jail" Burress leaves us with this thought:

"What are you doing now? You still mad at your job? You still angry about your life? Cause I'm back living my life & enjoying my family while you're stuck doing the same thing."

Diplomatic right to the end.
