WORST FEARS REALIZED, BERRY GONE FOR SEASON WITH ACL TEAR & A FEW OTHER NOTES

Could it get any worse for Chiefs' fans after yesterday's horrible 41-7 loss to Buffalo? Yes, sadly it can, Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry, who was injured on the third snap of the game, suffered a torn ACL & he'll be lost for the season. Berry was injured when Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson cut him, a move that's not against the rules, but players look down on anyone attacking another players legs. He hit Berry's knee with his helmet. Just like the injury to tight end Tony Moeaki, the Chiefs are ill-prepared to fill Berry's spot in the lineup. John McGraw played in the base defense, but when they went to a sub package to rush the passer, Sabby Piscatelli played strong safety & we watched several receivers run by him as he was looking into the backfield. Neither he or McGraw have Berry's closing speed, so expect a dropoff in the Chiefs defense. A dropoff like we saw yesterday? Yeah, like that.

Listening to coach Todd Haley's Monday news conference just now, I was struck by his failure to mention Berry at all. If not for a reporter's question near the end, he would've avoided the issue all together. I find that strange. I also found some of his explanations for yesterday weird. "We're not going to let yesterday drag us down & not have an exciting, productive season. We can still reach our goals" Haley said. Either he was brainwashed by the marketing department minutes before walking into the press room or he's hittin' the pipe. "On a 4th quarter punt, our coverage guys were gong full speed down field, so I knew we hadn't given up" he added. last time I checked most special teams guys are fringe players, if not for covering kicks & punts, they wouldn't be on an NFL roster. They have to run hard every time they go on the field, this shouldn't be news to anyone who's ever watched a professional game.

Martin Manley of Upon Further Review, points out the Chiefs have lost their last three home games by more than 21-points. Oakland, Baltimore & Buffalo have beaten K.C. in Arrowhead 102-24 in their last three home games. Martin also pointed out these 3 defeats are in the 14 worst home defeats since the Dallas Texans became the Kansas City Chiefs. That is something to be concerned about don't you think?

Tony the Tiger pointed out in an email, looking at Bill Muir in the coaches box yesterday "is the guy even awake? He looks like my dad on Thanksgiving after dinner & he's calling our plays, really?" Tony I don't know there are any requirements for body language in the coaches box, but Muir did look bored & tired just as you say.

Couple of other injuries to update you on, Texans' wide receiver Kevin Walter suffered a fractured shoulder yesterday & will be lost for 8-10 weeks. One more Rams injury to report, right tackle Jason Smith will miss 2-3 weeks with a high ankle sprain. Panthers middle linebacker Jon Beason is said to have torn his Achilles tendon yesterday & will be lost for the season. He is Carolina's best defensive player, no question, so a major loss.

It took less than a year, but Tampa's LeGarrette Blount has begun whining about his workload. Blount got only 5 carries in yesterday's loss to Detroit. "I'm a playmaker & a playmaker needs the ball in his hands to make plays" Blount said. One game, one loss & he's already blaming it on a lack of carries for him. Blount has always been a me-first player, this should surprise no one.

I've gotten a lot of feedback on this morning's Chiefs post. We can talk more about it tonight when Rich's Football Report on the Radio airs at 6:10PM CDT on KRMS 1150AM & 97.5FM or by live internet stream www.krmsradio.com Give me a call at 302-7000 or toll free 877-330-1150.

With the NFL always saying that they are looking out for the "Safety" of the players, defensive personnel still get screwed. The play by Stevie Johnson that ended Eric Berry's season, should have been addressed years ago. That shot was definitely a "kill-shot" and appeared intentional from the one replay I was able to see. Johnson should be fined by the league and the NFL needs to do something about implementing a rule that corrects the shots to the knees of "Defenseless" players on the defense.

I see you are still predicting 4 wins this season for the Chiefs...Unless there is BIG inprovements in all aspects of the games, I don't see more than 2 (though with the perfomance of the Vikings and Colts...who knows and we'll see with the Broncos and Raiders tonight). Pehaps we can be in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes this year...

      Sean,
It's a lazy block, he could have engaged Berry waist-high like most receivers do. It's a chicken shit block. Hines Ward loves blocking & he never uses a cut.

This team is in dire straits. They might just end up in the Luck sweepstakes but they have so many players that need replacing (Tyson-Belcher-a load of offensive linemen, TE depth, RB depth, a real franchise Q It's an extensive list.

    Rich,
I'm not a doom and gloom type. But I have to tell you that if Haley doesn't change he needs to go. I have been patient with him, giving him a chance, but three O coordinators? Two of which he ran off. Ever since Weis left http://www.tampabay.com/sports/college/article1188540.ece
(I include the last two reg season games of last year) our O has been really bad. All the good NFL teams don't change coaches like underwear. Scott P needs to make some tough decisions. I believe Haley has to go, I just don't think he can let coaches coach. I don't want to be disrespectful, but I think Haley is compulsive.
Take care buddy. According to your BIO and your posts, we have some things in common; a wonderful wife, living with pain, and a great Dad, who I miss.
Look forward to read your next post.

PS I think our season is over, playoff wise. What do you think?

      Andy,

With millions in stadium renovations & a terrible economy, Clark Hunt won't be happy with more empty seats & that's what they're facing if this team doesn't click. Haley alienated thousands of KC fans along the way, so he doesn't have a big margin for error.

I'm similarly unimpressed with some of Scott Pioli's draft picks. You can read my comments before, during & after the last 3 drafts by accessing the archives on the left side. The '09 draft was pretty much a washout, Ty Jax, Q Lawrence & Succop are the only remaining Chiefs from the draft, you simply can't blow premium(top 3 rounds)picks.

Thanks for reading & taking the time to comment, give my radio show a call some Monday night, love to talk to you.

      Rich
