COLLEGE FOOTBALL WEEK 3, WHAT I SAW
Forget about all the ESPN/ABC "Road test" hype, OU is one freakin' tough team.
"Big Game" Bob Stoops has a helluva time winning BCS Bowl games, but his teams are stout against everybody else. They proved just how tough they are tonight at Florida State. Brent Venables' defense is quite a unit, their linebacker play is superb, their defensive front gets after the QB & with the exception of one play, their DB's cover a lot of ground & tackle extremely well. OU held the Seminoles to just 27-yards rushing, making them one-dimensional & easier to defense. There was some frightening hitting in this game, guys knocked out of action on both sides. WR's Ryan Broyles & Kenny Stills might be the best pair of wideouts in the nation, Stills caught the go-ahead touchdown with 7:00 remaining after being sidelined by a vicious hit. Mizzou is in for a really difficult evening next Saturday.
This is the definition of total domination.
We couldn't stomach the $40 pay-per-view on the Western Illinois-Mizzou game, so we enjoyed the game the old fashioned way, listening to it on the radio. Mike Kelly, Howard Richards & Chris Gervino broadcast what might be Mizzou's most perfect game ever. So to my good friend Joe Z.(a Western Illinois alum) I'm not bashing the Leathernecks, I'm gloating over the Tigers' performance. Yeah, I know it was Western Illinois, but there were a number of little guys who got pounded today. But none worse than the beatdown Mizzou put on W. Illinois. Here are a few game stats:
Score 69-0
Total yards Western Illinois 44 Mizzou 744(beat the school record by 81-yds)
1st downs W. I. 1(yes one, fewest ever allowed by a Tiger team) Mizzou 30
Rushing yards W.I. 24 Mizzou 428
Passing yards W.I. 20 Mizzou 316
Individual stats:
Games' leading rusher Henry Josey 14 carries for 263-yards, 3 scores & he only played the 1st half. In three games, Josey has 29 carries for 400-yards.
After E.J. Gaines returned a punt 44-yards for a 4th quarter touchdown, Howard Richards said "69-0 isn't the worst news for Western Illinois, it's the 4:48 remaining on the clock." This was the definition of total domination. Tiger fans, hope you enjoyed it, OU in Norman on national TV awaits one week from tonight.
Who says you can't win with 6 total yards passing?
Not Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald as his Wildcats were upset by an Army team that completed exactly 1 pass for 6-yards, 21-14. The Golden Knights ran for 381-yards & controlled the clock with over 40-minutes time of possession.
R.G.III continues to amaze me.
Baylor's Robert Griffin III had just another day at the office, completing 20 of 22 passes for 265-yards & 3 touchdowns. He also ran 8 times for 78 additional yards in their 48-0 pounding of Stephen F. Austin.
BYU shows the ultimate blueprint for losing big in college football.
You've heard it all in "coach speak" for years, but it's true, run the ball, don't commit turnovers or penalties. Tonight BYU hosted in-state rival Utah & they proved to be most generous hosts. The Cougars had 11 total yards rushing, committed 7 turnovers & were flagged for 9 penalties. Nuff said right? Utes win 54-10.
Good to see them back.
Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill was back on the Gopher's sideline today after suffering a seizure last weekend during the game. Florida State wide receiver Kenny Shaw was knocked cold when he was sandwiched between two Sooner defenders. After being carted off, he returned to the Seminole sideline late in the 4th quarter, walking & talking just fine.
Ohio State is really pretty sad.
Just 35-yards passing & 2 measly field goals, I told you yesterday Ohio State didn't scare me in the least. They proved me right losing to Miami 24-6 in a game that wasn't as close as the score. This program needs a lot of rebuilding, players, image, integrity etc. OSU QB Joe Bauserman was 2 of 14 for 13-yards. Pathetic.
If Penn State shows up in the polls again this season, I'm going to scream.
Once again, the Nittany Lions played very poorly, just barely squeaking by Temple 14-10. JoePa's Lions are almost impossible to watch. Temple gave up the winning score with less than 3-minutes remaining. I'd rather have watched 3 hours of Jersey Shore. I've never seen it, but it's really bad right?
Down 27-10 with less than 10-minutes to go? "We got 'em right where we want them."
Sure seemed that way watching Iowa come storming back to score three unanswered 4th quarter touchdowns in 7:04. Hawkeye QB James Vanderberg hurled 3 TD passes when it counted to beat a Pitt team that started celebrating a little too early. Hawks win 31-27.
Notre Dame finally won a game defeating Michigan State.....big freakin' whoop.
No comments needed, horrible game to watch.
Gators come out a winner in the Flag Bowl.
Tennessee & Florida played an ugly game today, the Gators coming out on top 33-23. The game featured 26 penalties for 244-yards while the Vols totaled minus-9 yards rushing. That qualifies as ugly right?
I'm a "night owl" but this is ridiculous.
At 12:15AM CDT, the Oklahoma State Cowboys & Tulsa Golden Hurricane is just kicking off in Tulsa. A lightning delay of over 3-hours caused the game to be moved back past midnight, but play it they will. Jeez, I thought watching Hawaii home games was late.
This guy will be a monster in the NFL.
South Carolina's Marcus Lattimore had another huge game tonight. Steve Spurrier's Gamecocks needed it against a very tough Navy team. S.C. won 24-21 on the strength of Lattimore's 246-yards on 37 carries & three touchdowns. The 230-pound true sophomore is a load to try & stop. Not a speedster, but a back that dishes out a lot of punishment on defenders.
That 17-game winning streak? No more thanks to Clemson.
Thanks to an offense that amassed 624 total yards & a defense that threw a shutout in the final 20-minutes of the game, Auburn's 17-game winning streak is no more. They were living on borrowed time the past two weeks but ran into an opponent good enough to pull the plug once & for all. Tigers win 38-24.
How good is Andrew Luck? He showed it tonight whipping Zona 37-10.
In the 1st quarter, Stanford lost WR Chris Owusu & TE Coby Fleener, their two top receivers. They didn't return & Luck never missed a beat, this is why he's my Heisman front-runner. Luck completed 20 of 31 for 325 & two touchdowns. He also ran 3 times for 36-yards, each carry resulting in a first down. That's pretty efficient right? The Cardinal defense stuffed Arizona's running game, holding them to just 51-yards. Tho Zona QB Nick Foles completed 15 of 16 first half passes, they only scored 10 2nd quarter points. In the second half after being unable to run the ball, the Wildcats couldn't protect Foles & the game turned ugly in a hurry.
I figured it was coming, but now it's official.
Oregon's 56-7 win over Missouri State was the only thing Duck fans had to celebrate on Saturday. The "other shoe" finally dropped as the school received official notification from the NCAA with a dreaded "Letter of Inquiry." They are going to investigate the recruiting questions raised in the Willie Lyles case. Lyles is the owner of Complete Scouting Service in Texas & he was paid $25,000 by Oregon for a bogus report on players already in college. The $25K was allegedly for Lyles' help in securing running back LaMichael James for the Ducks. The NCAA doesn't issue these letters of official notification unless they have a lot of evidence against a program.
Big-12 wins rout after rout, well except for the Jayhawks.
How did the Big-12 do on Saturday?
Texas beats UCLA 49-20
Texas A&M beats Idaho 37-7
Baylor wins 48-0
Mizzou wins 69-0
Oklahoma beats #5 Florida State on the road 23-13
Kansas State beats Kent State 37-0
Texas Tech beats New Mexico 59-13(QB Seth Doege was 40 of 44 for 401 & 5 TD's)
Oklahoma State is leading 31-6 at half in Tulsa in the "Night Owl" special.
Hell, even Iowa State won Friday night to run their record to 3-0, so what happened to the Hawks? Well, it's like this.
Georgia Tech 66 Kansas 24
The game was close for about the first quarter & a half. Kansas ran & passed effectively enough to trail by 7 at half. Tech proceeded to score 6 unanswered touchdowns after intermission. Tech lost at Lawrence last year & they clearly had it in for the Jayhawks. Tech scored on the first snap of the game, a 95-yard run by Orwin Smith. They also scored on the first snap of the second half, a 63-yard run by Embry Peeples. Tech completed just 4 passes in the entire game. One of them went for just 4-yards, the other three totaled 160-yards. In fact Georgia Tech had 604-yards rushing......for a total of 768 yards on offense. The worst part about the 604-yards rushing? It came on 50 carries. If you'll do some quick math, that's over 12-yards per carry. Yikes! Orwin Smith had only 5 carries but they went for 157-yards. He also caught 2 passes for 108-yards & a touchdown. I couldn't get over the number of Tech ball carriers running free in the KU secondary, it was amazing.
Now that Okie State is up large at half, I'm checking out & will try something that never happens on a Saturday night during football, I'm going to bed before 2AM. Talk to you tomorrow.

You're right about Mizzou, they played a near perfect game. But W.I. isn't Oklahoma so they'll have to play just as good next Sat. to be in the game. Didn't see their game but reading your synopsis tells me it will be a tough test.

big MU fan. Love your web site. How about putting on site what MU Players are doing in the NFL weekly. I follow Macklin, Witherspoon, but have lost track of some of the other MU players. I understand Tim Barnes was picked up by Rams?

Hey Rich, no love for UNLV this week? They flipped the spread by 40 pts in a home shocker at Sam Boyd by beating Hawaii 40 - 20. Especially after the first two games this season (blowouts against Wisc and Wash St), all we were looking at was a fun tailgate. Maybe Bobby Hauck is on to something. Finally, smiles at the post game tailgate. It has been a long time!

Sean it looks from the box score the Rebels played their best games since a few years ago when they went to ASU & won. Held the Rainbows to 6-yards rushing & forced 4 fumble huh? Very nice, plus scoring 40-points is a lot for UNLV.
Thanks for reading!
