A LOT OF STARS GET BEAT UP, CAM THROWS FOR 400+ AGAIN & SAN DIEGO TO GET WELL NEXT WEEK

Too many starting players were felled by injury yesterday. Michael Vick sustained a concussion last night & may be held out for Sunday's game against the Giants. Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo went to the locker room early in yesterday's game in San Francisco. He had suffered a cracked rib but that wasn't going to sideline him. He returned to the field & threw for 345-yards & a pair of touchdowns leading Dallas to a come-from-behind 27-24 overtime win. Cowboy running back Felix Jones suffered a separated shoulder, he will miss at least this week's game, Monday night at Washington. Wide receiver Miles Austin strained a hamstring & might miss Moday's game as well. It will be very important Dez Bryant plays Monday, he was inactive yesterday with a quad injury. Jets all-pro center Nick Mangold was carted to the locker room after his ankle was injured. How seriously is unknown right now, but he didn't return to the game or the sideline. Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez sprained his right MCL & will miss 1-2 weeks. Green Bay safety Nick Collins lay motionless for 10-minutes yesterday after colliding with Panther running back Jonathan Stewart. As he ducked his head to tackle Stewart, the RB leaped over Collins but his thigh clipped the safety's head. He has full feeling in his extremities but stayed hospitalized in Charlotte overnight. He returned to Green Bay this morning but he is expected to miss at least this week's game versus Indianapolis. Chiefs running back Jamal Charles was placed on I.R. according to Todd Haley in his Monday news conference. Bears starting right tackle, Gabe Carimi, the team's 1st round draft pick, suffered a dislocated right knee & will miss at least a month. Once he went out, Chicago's shuffled O-line had trouble keeping the New Orleans Saints off QB Jay Cutler. Carolina linebacker Thomas Davis tore his right ACL & will be out for the remainder of the 2011 season. It's the 3rd consecutive year he has suffered an ACL injury. Davis, along with MLB Jon Beason, were the primary run stoppers & without them, it leaves a gaping hole in the Panther defense. He claimed the injury occurred when he was leg-whipped by a Green Bay lineman. This is an illegal move but it happens & if you played football & were ever leg-whipped, I can only say it's a dirty play that can cause real damage to the one on the receiving end.

Carolina rookie quarterback Cam Newton threw for 436-yards, his second 400+ passing performance in two weeks. He threw a touchdown pass to Brandon LaFell, who made a spectacular catch in the back of the endzone. Newton also lead his team in rushing, gaining 53-yards on 10 carries & ran one in for a score. But what he needs to learn is, is unlike the SEC, everybody at this level can run & close on the ball quicker than anything you've ever experienced. He was picked three times, twice by Charles Woodson, who closed on the ball so fast, Newton was shocked both times. There's a reason Woodson was NFL defensive player of the year. But the way he moves within the pocket, it appears he will transition to this level at a pretty rapid rate. He has obviously absorbed his classroom & coaching like a sponge. The improvement he's shown so far is nothing short of amazing to me.

It looks like Jacksonville rookie QB Blaine Gabbert will get his chance very soon. After starter Luke McCown threw 4 interceptions in a 6 for 19 performance, he got the hook. Gabbert completed 5 of 6 for 52-yards & stayed away from a turnover, so I think he'll be the starter in Jacksonville in a week or two.

The shot Falcon cornerback Dunta Robinson put on Eagle receiver Jeremy Maclin last night should draw a hefty fine from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. He launched himself, helmet first, at Maclin's head. He was flagged for the shot, he can expect a smaller paycheck after the fine is levied & since he did the same thing last season, he could draw a 1-game suspension. This hit was as blatantly against the new policy as it gets. He should have been thrown out of the game. Maclin sat out a couple of plays but returned to action. He had a great night, 13 receptions for 171-yards & a pair of touchdowns, but it was a 4th & 4 drop with less than 2-minutes remaining that will be remembered.

The Bills amazing comeback yesterday was my favorite game of the day. Not a lot of defense in the second half, but the game was immensely entertaining. Of course a major part of the Bills winning drive was courtesy of the Raiders who just can't restrain themselves penalty-wise when it counts. Tight end David Nelson caught the winning score with 14-seconds remaining. He was completely wide open in the middle of the endzone after two Raider defenders failed to switch off in their coverage. But the game wasn't over at that point, Oakland's Jason Campbell flung an arcing Hail Mary into Buffalo's endzone & after a battle for the ball, rookie Da'Norris Searcy held on for the interception. Referee Mike Carey was headed to the locker room when the replay official in the box beeped him & told him to "go under the hood" & check the play. After 10-minutes, carey walked back onto the field & in front of maybe 3,000 stragglers leaving the stadium, said "after review, the call on the field is confirmed." O.K.

Has anyone noticed Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress caught 4 passes last Sunday night in the 4th quarter. That's it for the first two games, the other 7 quarters of football, he's been shut out.

After all their big talk & bluster after their 35-7 beatdown of the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, the Ravens laid a major egg yesterday in Nashville, losing to the Titans 26-13. maybe beating Pittsburgh was too big a deal.

It blew my mind watching the Cowboys-Niners game yesterday just how many Dallas fans there were in the stadium. I would guess the number was near 10,000, they made a lot of noise all afternoon.

I need to get my show rundown finished so I'm cutting this post a little short. Please listen to my show "Rich's Football Report on the Radio" tonight on KRMS 1150AM, 97.5FM or on the internet stream at krmsradio.com
