MIZZOU STAYS FOR '12, A&M BUS STORY IS JUST THAT, GARCIA'S GONE & IT'S TEBOW TIME IN DENVER
According to interim Big-12 Commissioner Chuck Neinas, the University of Missouri will remain a member for the 2012-2013 athletic season, which includes basketball. With TCU joining the Big-12 next season, the conference will have ten teams. Since the Horned Frogs chose not to join the Big East, they will need to pay a $5 million exit fee even tho they never played a game in that conference. The Big East will have but 6 member schools for next season & how this conference keeps it's BCS automatic bid is way beyond my pay grade. The Mountain West doesn't have one but the Big East does?
For the first time since December of 1982, there's not a Florida school in the Top-25 rankings. That's 472 straight polls that contained Florida, Florida State or Miami, often all of them. The Seminoles are on a 3-game losing streak currently, Florida has been smoked the past two weeks by a combined 79-21 & Miami has lost every other start this season to post a 2-3 record currently.
I mentioned yesterday Mike leach could be a candidate for the now-vacant Arizona head coaching position. Leach is now considered to be the leading candidate for this opening.
Another point I made last week was the phoney uproar over Illinois 6-0 record. I mentioned the Illinin had withdrawn from the yearly opener in St. Louis with Mizzou. That along with their last minute victory over Western Michigan has more than a few national college writers doubting Illinois' validity as the 16th ranked team in the land.
Texas Tech has lost their leading rusher for the season after being injured Saturday night against A&M. Eric Stephens took nearly every snap this season, his backup has but 107-yards for the season. In other Tech news, the accusations that A&M A.D. Tweeted about the way their charter buses were vandalized are now being disputed strongly by Tech administration, the bus drivers & a pair of Holiday Inn employees. They claim one bus had shoe polish, not spray paint or feces, on a few windows & it came off easily. They also state the "feces" inside the bus claim was way off-base. There were clumps of catfish bait thrown thru two open bus windows. Now if you've ever used "dough bait" you know it smells awful, but it's not feces, as was charged by A&M. The whole thing stinks & not because of the fish bait. Bad behavior compounded by half-true accusations make this story smell really pretty bad.
How happy are sports fans of Wisconsin & Michigan? In Wisconsin, they have the 5-0 Packers, the #4 ranked Wisconsin Badgers & Milwaukee's Brewers, who are currently tied 1-1 in their quest for their first World Series since 1982. They lost to the St. Louis Cardinals that year, the same team they're currently battling in the NLCS. In Michigan, they have two ranked teams, the #11 Michigan Wolverines at 6-0 & #23 Michigan State currently 4-1. The Detroit Lions are the NFL's only other undefeated team & the Tigers are competing with the Texas Rangers in the ALCS. Pretty amazing stuff for the two states.
After being suspended 5 times by coach Steve Spurrier, QB Stephen Garcia was dismissed from the South Carolina program Tuesday afternoon. Spurrier made the move after Garcia failed yet another random test for alcohol. When he tested positive in April & was suspended for all of spring practice, he was told one more positive test & he would be dismissed from the football program. On October 4th, Garcia was called into to take the test that would be his last for the Gamecocks. Garcia, a senior, had thrown for 7,600-yards, 47 TD passes, 15 rushing TD's & he even caught a TD pass. Spurrier seemed broken-hearted about releasing Garcia "I feel like we failed him." Garcia's father Gary, said he didn't hold the school responsible or coach Spurrier "Stephen knew this was his last chance & yet he couldn't stop from drinking a few beers. We need to get him back home to Florida & get him right. We love him but he has to take responsibility for his actions, actions that hurt Stephen & his team. We'll get him here & help him all we can, but first things first, he must learn from all this." What a refreshing stance from a parent. I wish Garcia nothing but the best & I certainly respect his father. New starter Connor Shaw, a sophomore, started last Saturday & threw 4 touchdown passes. The Gamecocks currently are ranked 15th nationally, their highest ever after 6 games.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reinstated safety Tanard Jackson after being suspended for one full year for his third violation of the NFL's drug policies. He was playing at a pro bowl level when he was suspended last season & is healthy after the year off, so I expect him to return to the starting lineup quickly.
In the "don't criticize the offensive coordinator" department, Jets receiver Derrick Mason, benched last Sunday for negative comments attributed to him regarding O.C. Brian Schottenheimer, was traded to the Houston Texans on Tuesday. New York will receive a conditional pick for the 15-year veteran.
The Raiders stopped Houston's last play bid for a comeback win Sunday, Michael Huff intercepted a Matt Schaub pass in the endzone. I said at the time, the late Al Davis was watching out for his team on the play. After some investigation, the NFL found this might really have been true. Turns out Oakland had only 10 men on the field before the last play, snapped from the Raider 4-yard line. So maybe their owner, who passed away Saturday morning, was in fact looking down on his beloved Silver & Black.
It took all of two days for the Tebow express to pull out of the station. Denver head coach John Fox named Tim Tebow his starting quarterback for the Miami game. The game, played in Florida, will salute the 2008 BCS Champions, the Florida Gators, quarterbacked by Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. So it's possible as many as 40-50% of the crowd could be rooting for Tebow instead of the homestanding Dolphins. Bizarre.
