CAMPBELL KICKED TO THE CURB, MORE RAIDERS-CHIEFS NOTES & WHY IS TIM TEBOW SUCH A HUGE STORY?
Former Raider starting quarterback Jason Campbell was surprised Tuesday when he heard about his team's trade for Carson Palmer on ESPN. As he was laying bed, still under the spell of pain medication, he heard the Raiders had traded two draft picks for the holdout former Bengal starter.
"I was halfway still on pain medicine, it was kind of a moment of silence. I looked at my fiancee' to see if I was gonnasay something. There's different things that go thru your mind, but you don't want to fill your mind with those thoughts."
It's so nice to hear from the media that you've been replaced. Because that's what's happened, make no mistake about it. The Raiders will not keep another highly paid quarterback when they've committed two high draft picks to obtaining another signal caller. It just adds insult to injury as you know you've been kicked to the curb while you lay in pain, pain you received while fighting for this team, the team that has made it clear you're no longer wanted. Very nice. Just another reason for me to "dislike" the Raiders.
Vikings cornerback Chris Cook will not be in uniform today as he cools his heels in jail, charged with domestic violence, his second arrest in the past 8 months. His prior run-in with the law was for a gun charge. Does Chris have issues? Gun charges, domestic violence, these are serious charges, before he returns to football, he needs to find out the causes of these problems & work at getting himself right.
The "torch & pitchfork" mob is forming in Lawrence Kansas & they're coming for head coach Turner Gill. After another lopsided drubbing at the hands of in-state rival Kansas State, Jayhawk fans are beginning to question if Gill is the right man to turn around the cellar-dwelling Kansas football program. Even KU A.D. Sheahon Zenger said last night "We will get this thing fixed & we will continue to evaluate the program on a week-to-week basis. At the University of Kansas, we will never make complete evaluations until the season is complete & the body of work is complete." So I interpret that as "Gill's on the hot seat & he'd better win a game or two before the season ends." His 5-14 overall record & 1-11 conference record hangs heavy with Jayhawks, especially when they're mocked on national TV. This isn't ideal for any program, especially one that is a perennial top-5 basketball program. They're not used to being a laughing stock & don't like it. I appreciate that, but Gill inherited a senior-laden roster that had little depth, did you expect him to turn this program around in less than 2 full seasons? Let him get another recruiting class into the program & then see what he can do.
The Raiders have two special packages in for rookie QB Terrelle Pryor. Whether Hue Jackson calls them, is not known at this time. Carson Palmer will not start, Kyle Boller will open at QB. Placekicker Sebastian Janikowski will not be active today, his ailing hamstring will prevent the deadly long-range kicker from playing today. The Raiders have signed Dave Rayner to kick today. All-pro defensive tackle Richard Seymour will be a game time decision. So what about Chiefs' wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin? if you listen to coach Todd Haley, you'd be more confused & frustrated than ever. He laments this difficult decision, should he activate Baldwin or leave Jeremy Horne or Terrence Copper on the game day roster? Haley says Baldwin could have been active for the Colts game, he was perfectly healthy. So what's the issue? Did you draft this guy to stand on the sidelines in his street clothes? If he can't play special teams right now, don't activate a player at another position, on a roster this devoid of quality depth, is your first round draft pick going to make or break your chances to win this afternoon in Oakland? If not now, when? Just when I think Haley has turned the corner, he says crap like this.
By my count there are 4 rookies starting at quarterback right now & 3 2nd year players. So why is Tim Tebow the only story? Why is this young man so polarizing? Why does he get more attention than the other 6 rookie & 2nd year guys? Why is so much of the stories about him so negative? I think it just another example of how divided this country is, if you don't like his beliefs, trash him, make him look so unappealing people will believe he can't play quarterback or even be considered for the job. I'm not a believer in Tebow's NFL future, I doubt he can ever measure up as a starting quarterback. But I also don't believe Kyle Orton or Brady Quinn are the answer in Denver or anywhere else. I doubt any of them will be with the Broncos next season. The previous coaching staff drafted Tebow, now John Fox is stuck with him, so why not let him play, see what he's capable of doing. Your team isn't going anywhere, so what's the issue? When you have respected NFL scribes, like Mike Florio of NBC Sports, writing stuff like "It's the accuracy, at times, of a drowsy 3-year old standing at the toilet with the seat down." This is typical of the rhetoric in print about Tebow. If he wins today, beating the Dolphins, that would leave his team ahead of those quarterbacked by Christian Ponder, Blaine Gabbert, Cam Newton, Sam Bradford & as many as Colt McCoy. But that's not an angle that will ever be explored because it doesn't fit our agenda. We don't like Tebow, for reasons that will remain unexplained, so we will continue to evaluate him like he's holding back a Super Bowl contender from reaching their potential. Hogwash.
Think Congress isn't a screwed up mess, well I'll have a story for you in the next few days regarding their intention to hold hearings about college football conference realignment. Swell, I know they'll do nothing but help, plus they have nothing better to do right now. Jeez, how scary is this?
