COLLEGE FOOTBALLWEEK 8, WHAT I SAW
After suffering thru blowout after blowout this morning & afternoon, we finally got some excitement this evening along with two major upsets. One all-time NCAA record was broken & another tied, ABC had me ranting & raving plus Mizzou made me sick to my stomach. Two more undefeated teams fell, leaving us with 8. Here's what I saw.
Kansas State whips knots on Jayhawks in Sunflower Showdown.
man, Turner Gill needs some defensive coaches, or is it defensive players? Could it be both? For the 6th time in 7 games the Kansas Jayhawks gave up over 40-points. The Wildcats pounded them 59-21 & believe me, it wasn't that close. K-State QB Collin Klein ran for 4 TD's & threw for another, this young man has run for 10 touchdowns in the last three games, which is officially amazing. Kick returner/wide receiver Tyler Lockett returned a kickoff 97-yards for a touchdown, his second such return in two games. Bill Snyder's undefeated team will face a very angry Oklahoma team next week, But OU had better bring their lunch & a flashlight because KSU will fight all day & into the night.
The November 5th super showdown is still intact.
Top ranked LSU hammered #20 Auburn 45-10 & #2 Alabama was tied at half 6-6, They stormed out of the halftime locker room to blast Tennessee 37-6. These two titans have next week off before meeting in what could be the "game of the year" in Tuscaloosa.
This weeks "we got 'em right where we want 'em" award goes to Arkansas.
The #9 Razorbacks spotted Ole Miss a 17-0 lead playing at Oxford before waking up & scoring 29-unanswered points to win 29-24. Ole Miss is dreadful this season.
I knew Matt Millen was clueless about running a team, I didn't know he was a pig.
A color man for ESPN, "clueless" Matt Millen became "classless" Matt Millen. After a 46-yard touchdown run by Washington's Chris Polk, the cameras caught Polk's grandmother cheering wildly in the stands. Millen said "she's his gramma huh? I love those hot grammas & she is hot, hot, hot." I'm thinking to myself at the time, if Polk heard Millen's comments about the woman who raised him, he probably would have smacked the former Detroit Lions' executive. What a creep. By the way, the Washington Huskies were blasted by Stanford 65-21 as the Cardinal rushed for a school record 446-yards. They're heading for a PAC-12 showdown November 12th with 6-1 Oregon for the Rose Bowl or possibly the BCS title game. What's amazing about Stanford is they've won all 7 games this season by a minimum of 28-points, which is truly amazing.
One career record broken, one tied.
Houston QB Case Keenum passed Timmy Chang for the most career total offense yardage in NCAA history as the #19 Cougars smothered Marshall 63-28. Keenum also threw for 6 touchdowns & could own that record as soon as next week. He will also own the career passing yardage mark before it's over. Boise State's Kellen Moore tied Colt McCoy for the most wins by a quarterback with 45. The #5 ranked Broncos have 6 more games counting a bowl game, Moore will rewrite this record before he's thru. Boise moved their record to 7-0 in rather unspectacular fashion, beating the Air Force Academy 37-26.
Best game in the BIG TEN season without a doubt.
The #6 Wisconsin Badgers went down to defeat, no more BCS title hopes, no more undefeated season. For the second year in a row they were beaten by Michigan State in the closing seconds. Actually tonight's finish would have to be the "closing second." After jumping out to a 14-0 lead, Wisconsin surrendered a 2nd quarter safety on an intentional grounding call in the endzone by QB Russell Wilson. The Spartans took the ensuing kickoff & drove 72-yards in just 4 plays to make the score 14-9. The Badgers' next drive stalled out & they attempted a field goal that was blocked. Sparty took over & drove for the go-ahead touchdown. Wisconsin goes 3 & out, their punt gets blocked for another touchdown & they go into halftime leading 23-14. They go back & forth until the Wilson throws a short touchdown pass, tying the game 31-all with 1:26 left in the game. MSU QB Kirk Cousins brings his team down to the Wisconsin 44-yardline with 4-seconds left. Cousins hurls a desperation "Hail Mary" & Sparty's prayer was answered as Keith Nichol snags the tipped ball & forces it over the goal line for the apparent game winner. But the officials ruled no touchdown, spoting the ball at the 1-foot line. But after further review, it was ruled to be the game-winning touchdown & the place erupted. It was the right call.
The lightning delay should have warned the Sooners of things to come.
The opening kickoff was delayed by 1 hour & 45-minutes because of lightning in the Norman area. After they finally got underway, it took Texas Tech just 1:08 to score & they never trailed, upsetting OU, who had won 39-straight home games. Their last loss in Norman was to TCU in 2005, they hadn't lost to a Big-12 team since 2001. The 41-38 Tech win was no fluke, they out-hustled, outplayed & out-coached the Sooners. Looks like OU's BCS title hopes are gone now as well. Tech rebounded after brutal 4th quarter losses the past two weeks to A&M & Kansas State. Quarterback Seth Doege(Day-gee) threw four touchdown passes & ran for another. He fought thru bad snaps & dropped passes plus a withering OU pass rush. The loss certainly takes a lot of the anticipation off the annual "Bedlam" game with Oklahoma State. The Cowboys are in the driver's seat with a 7-0 record but must also get by Tech & K-State before their December 3rd showdown in Stillwater aka "Bedlam."
First there was lightning, then there was anger.
Because of the weather delay in Oklahoma, ABC switched the entire country to the Washington-Stanford game, which at the time featured a 20-point Stanford lead. During halftime, the Texas Tech-Oklahoma kicked off & Tech quickly scored. I knew this because ABC was showing highlights of the game during what was becoming a Stanford blowout. Why didn't they switch at least the Midwest back to the Big-12 game? No, as Stanford continued scoring, up by as much as 37-points, we were unable to watch a 7-7 TT-OU game. I contacted my affiliate & was told it was an ABC decision from New York. Well that made me understand it completely, it was a corporate decision made in New York, those folks know what's best for us hicks in the sticks, even those of us who care about the Big-12. After the Tennessee-Alabama game, another blowout, came to an end, ESPN2 switched back to Bristol to begin a boring hour of college football scoreboard. Thankfully, after just 10-minutes, they switched to the Tech-OU upset-in-the-making. Why do they do the things they do? I know I'll never understand how they think cuz I'm just a dumb hick wantin' to watch me some football. Thank God there's some smart folks back East to look out fer us.
What I said weeks ago regarding Mizzou's season was right on target.
I said the Tigers would go as far as new QB James Franklin would take them. News flash: they're not going very far. The pieces were there for 8-9 wins if Franklin played well. But he puts his defense in a hole too often with turnovers. There were 4 more on Saturday & they were back breakers. Three of Franklin's turnovers resulted in 21-points, which was the difference in the 45-24 score. Twice in the fourth quarter, with the Tigers trailing by 14-points, Mizzou's defense got a stop & an interception. Franklin gave it right back, one on a pick, the other when he fumbled inside the OSU 5-yardline. When you're playing great offensive teams, you can't give them added chances with turnovers. Franklin is too careless with the ball & that will continue to hurt the Tigers. RB Henry Josey was having another fine day, 25 carries for 138-yards, but once the Tigers got down by two touchdowns, it made it more difficult to run the ball. With A&M, Baylor, Texas & Tech on the next four weeks, the Tigers are going to have to make a serious move just to get to .500, much less a bowl game. One more thought about this game before I sign off for the night, trailing 24-17, they get a stop with 1:35 left in the 1st half. OSU punts & in three plays the Tigers run out the clock without ever trying to take a shot for either a touchdown or field goal. Once again Pinkel takes two timeouts to the halftime locker room. The momentum had swung, the crowd was back into the game, why just shut it down?
