RECORDS FALL IN HOUSTON TONIGHT & OTHER NOTES

The Houston Cougars hosted the Rice Owls this evening & the records fell from the opening kickoff. Cougar return man Tyron Carter tied the NCAA career record for kickoff return touchdowns with his 7th, a 100-yarder. He is tied with former Clemson Tiger, C.J. Spiller, now with the Buffalo Bills. Then the rain began to fall & with it, so did the turnovers. Very quickly the 28-point underdog Owls were up 17-7. But as the downpour turned to a light sprinkle, the Cougars, led by quarterback Case Keenum, got rolling. The Houston QB had already set the NCAA all-time total offense record last weekend. He was 4 behind former Texas Tech signal caller Graham Harrell in career touchdown passes. When Keenum departed early in the 4th quarter, he was 5 ahead of Harrell. If you did your math correctly, you'd know Keenum threw 9 touchdown passes tonight, yeah, I said nine. For his 3+ quarters of play, Keenum completed 24 of 37 for 534-yards, nine touchdowns & one interception. The 17th ranked Cougars beat Rice 73-34 to run their season mark to 8-0. Another staggering stat from this game was Houston had only 21:35 time of possession, not much for 656-yards of total offense & 73-points. Wide receiver Patrick Edwards also had a career night, 7 receptions for 318-yards & 5 touchdowns. His TD's came from 57, 64, 37, 22 & 47-yards. If you saw the game or the highlights, it seemed like every catch Edwards made, he was running completely free in the Rice secondary. His 2 non-scoring receptions went for 43 & 48-yards. I love seeing Edwards go off like this. In a 2008 game at Marshall, Edwards sustained one of the most gruesome injuries we'd ever seen when he ran into an ATV trailer, parked carelessly right behind the endzone. He suffered a compound fracture of his leg & fought hard to return to the Cougars. With 5 more starts, including a bowl game, Case Keenum will scorch the former  record, he should easily top 150 career touchdown passes & 160 isn't out of the question. The only other quarterback who can pass Harrell is Boise State's Kellen Moore, who has 123 with 6 games remaining this season, but he won't catch Keenum. No one will for a while, probably a long while. Keenum will set the final big passing record when he throws for another 267-yards to pass Hawaii's Timmy Chang's 17,072.

To prevent the email questions asking what is the single game record for touchdown passes, the answer is also a Houston quarterback, David Klingler with 11 in one game. But he achieved this feat against Division II Eastern Washington, plus the game was played indoors at the Astrodome, tonight's game was outdoors with over an hour of rain.

In the Thursday injury report, Detroit running back Jahvid best will not play again this Sunday, still feeling the effects of a concussion he suffered two weeks ago. Miami running back Daniel Thomas hasn't practiced all week again with continuing hamstring issues. St. Louis quarterback Sam Bradford still hasn't practiced & continues to wear a protective boot. San Diego's starting left guard, Kris Dielman, won't play for at least 2-weeks after sustaining a concussion against the Jets last Sunday. On the plane trip home, Dielman suffered what was reported as "a violent seizure" & spent two nights in a San Diego hospital. Other Charger starters missing practice this week include left tackle Marcus McNeill(neck), RB Mike Tolbert(hamstring) & wide receiver Malcolm Floyd(hip).

Chiefs' coach Todd Haley said rookie Jonathan Baldwin would play in the slot position for now. He doesn't want to upset the progress Steve Breaston has made as an outside receiver. When he signed a free agent contract, Breaston figured to play the slot receiver & Baldwin, with his height, would play opposite Dwayne Bowe. When you're winning, don't mess with success. The two will most likely swap positions before next season. Everyone on the Chiefs' 53-man roster practiced at full speed on Thursday.
