THE FALL OF A COLLEGE FOOTBALL ICON - YOUR REACTIONS

After a few thousand Penn State students poured into the business district of State College, things got a bit rowdy. A TV satellite truck was tipped over, a few windows were broken & a trash can was set on fire. There were a few arrests & police fired some pepper spray to disperse the crowd. At this hour it appears to be over, the streets are clear & things have quieted considerably.

I've received 28 emails this evening & I'm going to answer the most asked questions.

The interim coach is Tom Bradley, the defensive coordinator since 1999, when Jerry Sandusky was forced out.

To the three who made a case for Paterno being allowed to finish the season. Let me reiterate, I hate the way this went down, I didn't want to see it end for Paterno or any other coach who has done so much for their university & community. How would you feel if one of these boys were your son? Would you be going to bat for someone who looked the other way while your son was violated by a pedophile? Or would football become secondary to your child's welfare? Matt Millen said "if we can't protect our children, what kind of a society will we have?" He played for Sandusky & Paterno but he thought of his son & his grandson & quickly came to the conclusion JoePa had to go.

So far this sleazeball has claimed 9 confirmed young men, a university president, an athletic director, a university vice president & a head football coach. There's more to come without doubt, more kids & more from the football program(coaches).

Former university president Graham Spanier & Joe Paterno

Five people asked about Mike McQueary, basically 3 different questions. McQueary played at Penn State, he's 37-years old, currently coaches the wide receivers & is the program's recruiting director. Yes, he really did go call his dad from his office after witnessing Sandusky raping a 10-year old boy. At least that's what he testified to before a state grand jury. He also testified he called coach Paterno the morning after the incident & went to his home to tell him of what he witnessed. I don't know what possessed him to not stop Sandusky from from his assault. I can't imagine what went thru his head, what caused him to make the decision he made. Sandusky was no longer on the Penn State coaching staff in 2002, he resigned in 1999. He was no longer a superior, but something that has become very apparent, tho he was no longer on the payroll & many people within the university knew what a scumbag he'd become, he still had full accessibility to the football building, weight room & maintained an office there.  I think McQueary will not be on the Penn State staff as soon as the season ends. There's a lot of bad blood directed at him for his lack of action. I wonder how he goes to the grocery store or church on Sunday, the stares he must get.

The long term fallout? The university's reputation is under fire, the football program will take an immense hit. I do expect a name coach to be signed to replace Paterno, otherwise their recruiting will be nearly impossible. The football program has been living in the past, their offensive scheme is archaic, it's less & less competitive every year. The Nittany Lions can still play defense, but are on the field too long because of the offensive ineptitude. Yes, I've heard Urban Meyer, but I don't know if he wants back into coaching, especially since he makes a great living working for ESPN without all the stress that drove him away two years ago. I think a coach who's currently employed at another school with a squeaky clean reputation is what they'll be looking for.

Yes, there are nothing but losers in this story, that's what happens when people shrug their responsibility, there are consequences. That's what happened here, people looked the other way, protected the university, the football program & Paterno. The children were collateral damage, they had no connection to anyone who looked the other way.
