CASSEL LIKELY GONE FOR THE SEASON, VICK HURTIN' TOO & REX RYAN STEPS IN IT AGAIN

Chiefs coach Todd Haley just said in his Monday news conference quarterback Matt Cassel will undergo surgery on his right hand & will miss "significant time." Tyler Palko will start next Monday night at new England. I don't want to sound callous about Cassel's injury, but what's the difference at this point? Cassel can't get time to throw behind this offensive line & Palko is a worse passer than Kansas City's starter. Like I said last night, this is the end of the road for the 2011 season. The one thing that could make it slightly interesting to watch is if GM Scott Pioli would make it very clear to every player & coach, they are absolutely playing for their jobs the next seven weeks. he has to mean it too, no one is exempt except the guys on injured reserve. Regardless of their draft history or contract, everyone is on a 7-week trial, fighting for their NFL life.

The Philadelphia Eagles are a sadder story than our Chiefs. Thought to be the "Dream Team" Philly has collapsed & is out of any serious playoff contention. QB Michael Vick has two broken ribs, WR Jeremy Maclin has a strained hamstring & a sprained AC joint(shoulder), OT king Dunlap sustained a concussion yesterday, cornerback Dominque Rogers-Cromartie has a high ankle sprain with torn ligaments & then there's the matter of DeSean Jackson being an outcast in his own locker room. He missed a special teams meeting Saturday morning & was inactive for yesterday's game. Coach Andy Reid told Jackson to stay away from the team all day yesterday, don't even come to the stadium. Some of his teammates were glad he was inactive, they believe DeSean is more worried about a new contract than helping this team get back on track. I think they're right.

If only NFL games were 45-minutes long, eliminating the 4th quarter. The Eagles would be 8-1 if that were the case, but it's not. Philadelphia has collapsed in the 4th quarter, surrendering leads 5 times, leading to their current 3-6 record.

Jets coach Rex Ryan has a very big mouth, that fact has been established long ago. But he keeps flapping his jaws & with that comes apologies & fines. He let one fly last night that should get the NFL fine machine fired up along with a carefully crafted apology that owner Woody Johnson will most certainly demand. As the Jets, beaten 37-16 at home by the Patriots, entered the tunnel after the game, a fan yelled "Belichick's a better coach than you Rex." Hardly anything to argue about but Rex didn't take it well & responded with "Shut the f*** up!" Yelling stuff like this to paying season ticket holders is never a good idea & I expect Ryan to have some splainin' to do. As I watched the YouTube video of this I kept wondering how insecure do you have to be to respond like this to anyone, much less to one of the people paying your salary? Isn't being an NFL coach enough? You have to curse at a fan to make yourself feel better after your team just got crushed at home? I understand the "heat of the moment" analogy, but Ryan needs to get a better grip & maybe stop talking so much trash so fans can't throw it back at you when you fail.

Much more tonight from Penn State, the injury front & the Monday night game. Don't forget my radio show tonight at 6:05-7PM.

    Hi Rich,
No Cassel? Palko in? Stanzi for sure the last couple of weeks. Like you said, does it really matter? Sometimes these supposedly weak-armed and/or undersized QBs are more resourceful than the big armed gun slingers and find ways to get it done. Drew Brees, Jeff Garcia, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Doug Flutie ... so who knows. Maybe now Bowe and Breaston will turn the shorter routes into big YAC plays. Maybe now the Chiefs will be able to execute a screen, hitch or bubble the way it should. Cassel never could. Time to let these skill position players earn their keep. Bowe, Breaston, McCluster, Baldwin... catch and run boys; catch and run.
