WORST DAY EVER IN OKLAHOMA, BCS CHAOS BEGINS AT IOWA STATE & YOUR EMAILS ON TIM TEBOW

As I watched tonight's game between #2 Oklahoma State & Iowa State, I kept thinking "don't let them lose, the state of Oklahoma has been thru enough today already." But it wasn't to be, that feeling you get, the one that senses an upset, became stronger as the game progressed. The fact that Joe Tessitore & Rod Gilmore, my personal favorite ESPN college football broadcast team, were doing the game gave me that feeling early in the contest. This pair has broadcast a lot of Thursday & Friday night upsets over the past 3-4 years. Early Friday morning, Oklahoma State officials received tragic news, Kurt Budke, head basketball coach for the Cowgirls & his recruiting assistant, Miranda Serna, lost their lives along with a pilot & co-pilot returning from a recruiting trip to Arkansas. They were the only ones aboard when their plane crashed late Thursday night. Word of this tragedy reached the football team early Friday morning in Ames Iowa. Needless to say, everyone associated with the university was devastated by the news. By the time their football team had seen their BCS title hopes go down in double overtime to the Cyclones, the mood at that other football school was pretty somber too. No more "Bedlam" springboard into the national title game with a win. OSU had lost, so the Sooners chances of getting anything better than a BCS bowl game were nearly gone. It was as bad a day as one could imagine for the State of Oklahoma, it started with tragic loss of life & just never got better.

The victory was good news for Iowa State, before the upset as a 4-touchdown underdog, the Cyclones were extreme longshots to become bowl eligible with OSU, Oklahoma & Kansas State, all ranked 14th or higher, left on their schedule. But they now have six wins, so they can go bowling if an invitation comes at season's end.

With Oklahoma State's loss, the BCS chaos can begin, let all the 1-loss teams start lobbying for a spot in the BCS Championship game. It will be intense, Oregon, Oklahoma, Alabama are the early favorites, but key matchups can change everything. USC plays at Oregon tonight, Alabama has an Iron Bowl date at Auburn & OU might salvage a little from beating Oklahoma State & there's even an outside shot for Arkansas, who plays LSU in two weeks. Boise State has no shot & I don't see Clemson, Virginia Tech or Stanford getting there either. Another contender with no chance would be the 10-0 Houston Cougars. I don't recall a Conference-USA team ever being invited to a BCS bowl, but if they can win out, they should get an at-large bid that would've been Boise's before their loss to TCU last week. The Cougars are getting some new found respect on Saturday, ESPN's College Gameday will originate in Houston this morning. They face SMU later today & finish with 7-3 Tulsa before the Conference-USA Championship game. If they win out, they can expect to be ranked as high as 6th after the conference title games are played. Even at 13-0, they'll never get enough votes to vault over the power 1-loss teams into the BCS title game. Still it's excellent recognition for the Cougars & their record-breaking passer, Case Keenum.

Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel, who plead guilty to DWI Friday morning, will lose his license for 30-days & have a 60-day driving restriction, whatever that is, but will not have to serve the 30-day jail time as part of his plea agreement with the court. If he violates the terms of the plea agreement he will have to serve 30-days in jail, this probation is for 2-years.

Washington coach Steve Sarkisian announced Keith Price's knee will not permit him to start at quarterback for the Huskies on Saturday at Oregon State. Redshirt freshman Nick Montana will start in his place. Yeah, that Montana.

Vince Young has taken all of the first team snaps at quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles this week & is expected to start for the injured Michael Vick. St. Louis left tackle Roger Saffold injured himself lifting weights on Friday & he's definitely out for Sunday's game in Cleveland. If the pectoral muscle is torn, he's finished for the season. The Rams are already without right tackle Jason Smith, out from a concussion he suffered three weeks ago. WR Danario Alexander will also miss Sunday's game with a pulled hamstring.

I told you last Monday there would be a lot of fines from Sunday's Detroit-Chicago game. The league handed out the bad news on Friday. The total tab comes to $62,500 for Detroit QB Matthew Stafford, DT Nick Fairley, DE Kyle Vanden Bosch & LB Rob Sims, Chicago DB D.J. Moore & WR Earl Bennett.

After Denver's dramatic win over the New York Jets last night, the emails came rolling in & I wanted to share a few of them with you. The intense sentiment for & against Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow continues to amaze me. Here's a sample of what I received Friday:

"Mr. Football, You need to get your head around the facts, this game was fixed. It doesn't happen very often, but last night's game was fixed. If you don't get that, your not the football wiseguy you claim to be."

I hate to rain on your conspiracy theory, but at 13-10, Denver had already covered the 6 1/2 point spread, they didn't need Tebow's touchdown to cover. If you're thinking about a moneyline bet, know this, less than 3% of all wagers made in Las Vegas on the NFL are moneyline bets, so the probability of that is almost zilch. Very few local bookies offer moneyline bets, so your "fixed game" theory doesn't hold water.

"Where was all this hate when Reggie White was always preaching?"

You're comparing apples to oranges, Reggie White was an umpteen-time Pro Bowl defensive end & a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Tebow has 8 starts in his entire career.

"Maybe he'd be more popular if he "Made it rain" in a strip club or shot himself in the leg while in a trendy night spot"

I'm a big lover of sarcasm, so I really liked this comment.

"If you look in the standings, there's a big W & a big L, there is no column for style points."

"I'm from Raider Nation, I hate what he did to us, but nevertheless he did it. I think Al Davis' famous quote is applicable here 'Just win baby.'"

I'm so G--D--- sick & tired of listening to the 'NFL Experts' run him down. Wasn't it these same experts who thought JaMarcus Russell was a can't miss & agreed with Tom Brady's selection at #199 of the draft?"

"Tebow was born in the Phillipines, where are the 'Birthers'?"

"It was so fun to see Rex Ryan eat a s--- Sandwich"

"I loved watching him run thru Revis' tackle & see Cromartie not even try to stop him in the open field. All that tough Jet talk was a lot of chickens---."

Very good email comments, I liked them all. But then there were more ugly ones, some not in my email.

"Tim Tebow makes JaMarcus Russell look like Warren Moon"    CBS' Shannon Sharpe

"The guy made a hell of a play didn't he? Just a second, I'll take a knee myself." Cowboy defensive coordinator Rob Ryan mocking Tebow's prayer kneel.

His twin brother's team gets whipped by Tebow's so even tho his team's playing Washington this week, he felt the need to stick his big fat nose into it. Every bit the class act his brother Rex is.

"There's no way this will continue, they can't keep fooling NFL defenses."  Tony Dungy

He would know, he made the playoffs 3 consecutive seasons with a 'no offense' Tampa team, the same team that John Gruden won a Super Bowl with the year after Dungy left town. Dungy went to a team that already had Peyton Manning, his comments ring hollow with me. Back to the emails.

"He's beaten a bunch of crappy teams, no big deal."

Denver beat Oakland, Kansas City & the Jets who have 14 wins between them, all had more wins than Denver when they were beaten by the Broncos. They also won three of the four on the road. I think Baltimore should be a helluva lot more concerned by losing to Tennessee, Jacksonville & Seattle, but no one even mentions the Ravens, it's just Tebow, Tebow, Tebow.

"I'm so sick of him dropping to one knee pretending to pray every time there's a camera around."

Where's the complaints every time other players drop to one knee after scoring a touchdown? Tebow has a camera on him every second of every game, that's why you see him kneeling to pray. You also see him talking to coaches, teammates, drinking Gatorade, looking at the defensive formation photos etc. The networks are goofy for Tebow, they know the kind of impassioned feelings his image causes.

"I'm orange & blue since birth & I can tell you it's a lot more fun winning than losing, something we were doing weekly with Kyle Orton. Especially fun beating Oakland & KC."

"3-14 with Orton, 5-3 with Tebow, I believe that's all that needs be said."

I saw an interesting set of stats today on ESPN. Tebow has more touchdown passes, more rushing yardage, more rushing touchdowns & fewer turnovers in his first 8 starts than the great John Elway. But I guess that's not important to the haters. One more email, it's a good one.

"I'm a Raider fan for the past 27-years but if my sons turn out like Tim Tebow, I'll be a very proud father. Somehow being honest, humble, a hard worker, an excellent teammate & leader isn't cool enough for some people. Why does his faith bother you so much, he's not entitled to have religion because you don't like it or believe in it? To me that's the worst example of selfishness & hypocrisy. Can't you see that? I hated Tebow the quarterback when he made us look ridiculous but I have nothing but respect for Tebow the man."

Any more thoughts on Tebow, the Chiefs, BCS or anything football? Please don't hesitate to drop me an email at rich@richsfootballreport.com

Honestly, my mouth (sorry the pun)drops open when I hear quotes about Tebow and his faith. Like it is some sort of oddity. Cameras are on Tebow for two reasons, because he is well the QB, and of course to add fuel to this sentiment towards him. The camera isn't on the water boy.
I wanted him to be a Chief because of his intangibles. You can teach fundamentals, but not intangible. He just wins. I think Tebow will have a great career. Fox says he is off the charts competitor. During the off season he will work on throwing the ball. If he fails, it won't be because he didn't give it his all. It is going to be hell playing the donkeys with their two pass rushers as it is.
