CHIEFS AS EXPECTED, PINKEL SPEAKS OUT & RICHROD LANDS IN THE DESERT

About two hours before kickoff, the Kansas City placed QB Matt Cassel on injured reserve, shelving him for the year. Then later the Chiefs showed a few positive things, a pass rush from a fired up defense, some semblance of a running game, but in the end the 34-3 loss to the New England Patriots was about as expected wasn't it? I mean Tyler Palko threw 3 interceptions, our tight ends committed 4 of the 5 penalties charged to Kansas City(what's new?) & they were very costly. Honestly the Chiefs played well for about 20-minutes of clock time in the first half, after that, it wasn't a pretty story.

I liked the onside kickoff attempt after their field goal, just a bad hop that struck Cory Greenwood on the calf or Kendrick Lewis' recovery would have been legal. I failed to understand why on 4th & inches at the New England 44 Haley chose to punt. What does he have to lose? They did another time, pretending they were going on 4th & one, but they were trying to get the Patriot defensive line to jump offside. It didn't work, they took a delay of game penalty & punted. Go for it for cryin' out loud, what do you have to lose? With their record, the personnel they're currently playing & their upcoming schedule, we're starring 4-12 right in the face. Haley even put offensive coordinator Bill Muir on the sideline instead of upstairs in the coaches box. I think it was because Bill was having a hard time staying awake directing his dynamic offense. When asked about the change to Tyler Palko, Muir said "It's like a pair of shoes you wear everyday, your favorite shoes. Then all of a sudden the heel falls off & you have to wear another pair of shoes. Maybe the new shoes are of equal value, but they just don't seem to have the same fit. Eventually they will." Alrighty then.

I liked Romeo Crennell's aggressive defensive scheme, but in the end, his guys were on the field way too long in the 2nd half. They held Wes Welker without a catch until late in the 4th quarter. The punt return touchdown by Julian Edelman was a back-breaker. I sincerely hope in the off-season, who ever is coaching this team will do everything in his power to teach tackling to his team. They're terrible as a team.

Palko's three picks all came the same way, he was late getting the ball out & it cost him. He throws a nice spiral, but there's not too much steam on it. A throw to a wide open Dwayne Bowe at the goal line was broken up when a stronger throw would've resulted in a touchdown. His downfield throws weren't accurate & the weakened Patriot secondary started sitting on the short routes, which made it hard to string together any kind of scoring drive. If this is how it went against a middle of the road defense, what's it gonna be like against the Steelers, Bears & Jets? Like I said, 4-12.

Tonight's radio show contest winner was Tom O. from Gravois Mills Missouri. He was the closest with a prediction of 31-3, missing the correct score by only 3 points. Nice try for Sandy K. who missed by only 4. We'll talk to you next Monday night Tom, congratulations.

The NFL & NBC has called an audible on their December 4th, Sunday night game. Originally scheduled to be the Colts & Patriots, it will now be the Lions & Saints. Much better game. I'm surprised they didn't make the same call on the Steelers & Chiefs this Sunday night. Maybe with three games already off the grid for Thanksgiving Day had something to do with it.

The mouth that roared, Jets head coach Rex Ryan, found out how much his post game vulgarity directed at a Jets fan will cost him. The league informed Ryan his pay will be docked $75,000 & he wisely accepted the fine, said it was warranted & promised he'll never do it again. At least until the next time, because  there will be a next time, he just can't help himself.

I questioned Jack Del Rio's calls at the goal line in the closing seconds of yesterday's loss to Cleveland. Apparently Jack knows his chances of returning as head coach are diminishing with every loss. His reply when asked about the last two plays was "Our offensive coordinator(Dirk Koetter) calls the plays, I can't speak to his thinking. You'll have to get with him." Dirk Koetter, meet the underside of the bus, your coach just threw you there.

A few other NFL notes remaining from the weekend. San Francisco has yet to surrender a rushing touchdown.....San Diego is 0-5 since coming off their bye week.....Setting aside the 0-10 Colts, the rest of the AFC, all 15 teams, has records between 3-7 & 7-3.....Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has a high ankle sprain & will miss a couple of weeks.....Ravens MLB Ray Lewis says he intends to play Thursday night against the Forty-Niners. After watching him try to just walk yesterday makes me believe he will have a helluva tough time going full speed in just three days.

"I can't point a finger at anybody but myself. The way I'm playing right now, they need to go & cut me, because I'm definitely not worth what I'm getting. It's frustrating."
Washington Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall after giving up a late reception to Dez Bryant leading to an overtime field goal that won the game. It was the second time this season Bryant beat Hall late in the game to set up a game-winner.

As exciting as the Tebow-led Broncos have been the past few weeks, he's not the long term answer & team vice president of football operations, John Elway was in the box Saturday night in Waco. With him was player personnel director Brian Xanders. The game featured two prospective 1st round quarterbacks, OU's Landry Jones & Baylor's RG3, Robert Griffin III.

Mizzou coach Gary Pinkel faced the press this morning to answer questions regarding his suspension & fines from last week's DWI arrest. When asked if he watched the game Pinkel said "Me & a couple of friends drove to the Lake of the Ozarks & we watched it in my condo, it was gut-wrenching. We struggled in the 1st quarter, we weren't focused, that's me. It's what I put them thru." He didn't read a prepared statement, he spoke from the heart as close as I could tell. I think he knows what he did & the damage it did.

The "U" has declared a self-imposed bowl ban for this season. The NCAA is investigating the Nevin Shapiro-Miami connection & it will come to a head resulting in all sorts of penalties, including bowl bans. Miami officials want to get a jump on the NCAA, punishing themselves instead of waiting for it to happen. Scholarship forfeiture will come next.

The University of Arizona will announce tomorrow their choice for a new head football coach & it will be Rich Rodriguez. I'm not a fan, he caught lightning in a bottle at West Virginia when his Mountaineer teams became a national power. They won 4 consecutive Big East titles. He was rumored to have been offered the Alabama job before Nick Saban but he turned it down. He was offered the Michigan job after Lloyd Carr retired & it set Wolverine football back about forty years. Not only were they very beatable, but they were sanctioned by the NCAA for violating practice time rules & a number of top recruits transferred to other schools. It became known nationally RichRod & his staff abused the players verbally & on a personal level which made recruiting more difficult. He was canned after three seasons & replaced by Brady Hoke who turned the program around in one season, posting a 9-2 record going into the season ending Ohio State game. Is this the best choice for Arizona? He brings a helluva lot of baggage & his last stop was hardly successful. I think there will be two more job openings in the PAC-12 fairly soon, Arizona State & UCLA.
