TWO QUICK NOTES

The Denver Broncos released quarterback Kyle Orton on Tuesday. By doing so, it saves the team $2.5 million in salary the rest of the season & it means Tim Tebow is going to remain the starter in Denver. What happens to Kyle Orton? I received several emails wondering if the Chiefs would be interested in claiming him off waivers. I sincerely doubt it, the Chiefs seem intent to hang onto their $27.4 million in unused cap money. Would Kyle Orton realistically give them the opportunity to win more than 2-3 games? I believe the answer is no since he would have to learn the offense & there are only six games remaining in the regular season. Orton would make a better backup QB than Tyler Palko, but Orton still sees himself as a starter & wants that opportunity & the high dollar contract that goes along with being an NFL starter. Plus, I think there's more than an even chance Matt Cassel's days as Kansas City's starting quarterback are numbered. I could see Scott Pioli taking a quarterback in the first round, making Cassel a starter for just one more year or maybe even the backup next season. Palko would be out altogether & Stanzi would remain as #3. The majority of Cassel's contract has already been paid out, he's due just over $5 million next year, they might even cut him. But getting back to Orton, I don't think he's any better than Cassel. he throws a better deep ball but he's completely immobile. I think someone will pick him off before he gets to the 6 & 7-win teams like the Bears. All the internet rumors have him landing in Chicago but their waiver claim is 22nd in line & I think a team like Washington will take him, Mike Shanahan might be coaching for his life. What about Indy? They have a 2-game lead in the race to be in position to draft Andrew Luck but what about their fans? Are they content losing every game the rest of the way. Come to think of it, they probably are hoping to finish no better than 1-15, thereby guaranteeing the first overall draft pick next April.

Remember back in September when I told you of my suspicions about some funny business attached to the Hawaii - UNLV game? Let me quickly refresh your memory. Hawaii opened as a 20-point favorite for their September 17th game at UNLV. But three days before the game a helluva lot of money came in on UNLV on the moneyline(no spread, they have to win the game straight up). The line fell to -17 before kickoff. UNLV clobbered Hawaii 40-20. From Thursday until after the game concluded on Saturday night, the alarm bells were going off in Las Vegas sportsbooks but because it was Hawaii & UNLV, no one outside of Nevada really took notice. Tuesday there was talk of the Honolulu Police Department opening an investigation of point-shaving allegations made against the University. By last night, the police said they did not intend to look at these allegations any further at this time. Having seen some crazy line movements in my days out in the desert, I have to say when veteran Las Vegas sports gamblers brought this to my attention back in September, I have to believe there's something to it. maybe not something that can be proved in court right now, but there was some sort of funny business.
