ALAMO BOWL IS THE SHOOTOUT TO END ALL SHOOTOUTS & MORE NEWS FOR FRIDAY MORNING
For all the people who complained about the LSU-Alabama 6-3 game, I hope you were watching the Alamo Bowl tonight. We were worn out after 3-hours & 40-minutes of nothing but offense. Baylor defeated Washington 67-56 in a game that shattered many bowl records. The 123-total points fell 2 short of the all-time record, 125 recorded by Marshall & East Carolina in 2003, but that was a double overtime game. This was in regulation. Even more amazing was the fact every single point was scored on offense, no defensive or special teams scores. The 17-touchdowns scored tonight eclipsed the old record of 16. More impressive was the combined 1,397-yards of total offense, blasting the former mark of 1,211. The Bears had 777-yards, 482 of it on the ground. Heisman winner Robert Griffin III was about the 3rd best offensive player on the field tonight. Not that he had a bad game, he ran for 58-yards, scored on a brilliant 24-yard run, threw for 295-yards & a touchdown. But in this game, I doubt RG3 even got 1 vote for MVP. Baylor RB Terrence Ganaway ran for 200-yards on just 21-carries & 5 touchdowns. The 244-pound back did a lot for his NFL draft status with an 89-yard TD run plus another from 43-yards. That was the second 80+ yard touchdown I've seen him have in the last three games. Ganaway might have raised his stock 2-rounds with his performance tonight, at least scouts will look at him differently from here thru the combine.

Was this RG3's last college game?
Washington sophomore quarterback Keith Price was unreal, throwing for 438-yards, four touchdowns & running for 3 TD's. His 8-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter was spectacular. Huskies coach Steve Sarkisian has something great to build on with Price & junior RB Chris Polk(147-rushing & a TD).

Now the big question is will RG3 move onto the NFL with one year of eligibility left? I have no doubt he'll make the jump into the pros. With leading receiver Kendall Wright & Ganaway both leaving, I believe he'll join them.
Notre Dame, cruising along with a 14-0 3rd quarter lead, reverted to their old ways, turning the ball over & it cost them the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando 18-14. Florida State intercepted both Irish QB's a total of 3 times in the second half & turned 2 of them into points. The last one was Notre Dame's 8th redzone turnover this season, an awful number.
If the Jets fail to beat Miami on Sunday, I fully expect offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to be fired. Owner Woody Johnson is a Rex Ryan guy, so he's not going anywhere & they're married to QB Mark Sanchez for another two years, so he won't take a fall. If New York fails to make the playoffs, somebody will pay & that person will be Schottenheimer.
According to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, a new name has surfaced for the Chiefs offensive coordinator job. It's a given, if current O.C. Bill Muir survives, he'll go back to being the O-line coach. But for all the rumors placing Josh McDaniels in K.C. next month, La Canfora says Patriot O.C. Bill O'Brien is a real possibility. His contract is up & the team has made no move to sign him for next season. Like all K.C. coaches hired by Scott Pioli, he has that New England connection the general manager covets so much. I don't know much about O'Brien, but I'm going to find out all I can. I know I don't want to see McDaniels working for the Chiefs under any circumstances.
Another Chiefs note concerns running back Jackie Battle's sore foot. It could keep him from playing Sunday leaving the Chiefs with Thomas Jones & Dexter McCluster as their only healthy RB's.
The silence from Jon Gruden the past few days is deafening. Ever since speculation began to grow about "Chucky" possibly returning to an NFL sideline near you, he's nowhere to be found. No denials, no "I'm staying on Monday Night Football forever" type quotes. I'm not a huge fan, too many ex-players claim Gruden isn't honest with his players & now he's having a running feud with former NFL head of officials Mike Pereira. Gruden makes too many errors on Monday night football that stem from his lack of understanding the rulebook. Pereira said Gruden has abused officials for years & very often he's completely wrong. But like I said last week, I expect him to be back in the league very soon.

Indy QB Dan Orlovsky & his wife welcomed triplets into the world on Wednesday. yesterday Colts' coach Jim Caldwell said "there's going to be a lot of lockout babies."
A few NFL veterans will most likely be playing their final game this Sunday. Kansas City center Casey Wiegmann will start his 175th consecutive game in Denver. Miami's Jason Taylor will call it quits after the Jets game & one of the New York greats, running back LaDainian Tomlinson might see this Sunday's game as his finale if the Jets don't make the playoffs. Minnesota tight end & blocking back Jim Kleinsasser is retiring as well. There will be more beginning next week.

When Wiegmann(#62) was part of the NFL's best offensive line
For all the people who sent comments & emails, my radio show was on Tuesday night. I tried to make this crystal clear on this page several times. It will be on Tuesday night again this week, January 3rd. After that, it will return to it's regular Monday night time slot. No podcasts are available for either Tuesday show. They will be back online starting January 9th thru the day after the Super Bowl, my last show of the season.
