CHIEFS FINISH ON A SEMI-HIGH NOTE BEATING THE TEBOWS 7-3.
It's not often a first quarter touchdown stands up for an entire game but as it unfolded, did you really believe we were going to see any Tebow magic? I never got that feeling, never thought Denver was going to mount a furious 4th quarter comeback. Yes, they ran the ball effectively, for a whopping 216-yards, but unless Willis MaGahee busted a long run, the Broncos just didn't appear to have it yesterday. Team Tebow met their defensive match in Romeo Crennel's gang. There was just nowhere to throw the ball, the Chiefs kept Tebow in the pocket & made him throw the ball to covered receivers.
Even after a fumbled punt by Javier Arenas gave Denver the ball at Kansas City's 20-yardline, they stalled out again, kicking a field goal for their lone points. Even after Dwayne Bowe left the game with a concussion, Kyle Orton completed enough passes to keep Tebow sidelined. And when their chance came in the 4th quarter, Denver managed just 2 first downs in four possessions, never crossing midfield.
So what did we learn about our 7-9 Chiefs? Well their interim coach & defensive coordinator can continue improving on what we've seen the past few weeks against the Broncos. We saw a team in a must-win situation playing at home losing to a team with nothing to play for except screwing up their draft position & a little revenge for Kyle Orton. Crennel's gang played hard all day & I think it really improved his chances of having the "interim" tag removed from his title. We can only hope Scott Pioli realizes his team has serious talent issues. You know, like they need a major infusion of real NFL caliber talent. Honestly, at least one-third of this roster needs to be replaced.
Don't get excited about the possibility of an easier schedule next season because of 2011's 7-9 mark. Nope, we get the NFC South & AFC North, which is bad news.
Their home schedule will include: Denver, Oakland, San Diego, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Carolina & Indianapolis.
The road schedule will feature the AFC West, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Tampa Bay & Miami or Buffalo.
Not a schedule that will lend itself to a 10-6 record like we saw in 2010. Plus there are other issues like free agency. Will the Chiefs make Dwayne Bowe their franchise player? Will they do the right thing & resign cornerback Brandon Carr? Will Pioli actually make a splash in the free agent market for real talent that costs real money or will he be satisfied to sit on the sideline with another $20-25 million of unused cap money? Is Josh McDaniels headed for Kansas City as the new offensive coordinator? Who will assume Crennel's job if he is promoted to head coach? All valid questions.
I promise to give you my evaluation of their current roster this week. I've been sick for four days & haven't been able to sleep with all the hacking but I'm feeling sleepy now, so I'm out till tomorrow night. Remember, no radio show tonight, it has been moved to Tuesday night, this week only. We'll be back at it next Monday before the BCS title game. This week's winner of the "Predict the Score Contest" is R.T. of Camdenton Missouri. He came in with a prediction of KC 16-Denver 13 which was the closest of the two people who said the Chiefs could win, everybody else took Denver. Congratulations R.T.! For the rest of you, give me a call Tuesday night & predict the score to win some great prizes.
