WEDNESDAY NOTES
I've made my skepticism of Brian Daboll's hiring quite clear. Now there's some solid reinforcement for that skepticism. Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald writes today in his "Weekly Buzz" column many Miami offensive players were glad to see Daboll go. Jackson reports he was told Daboll would say one thing to his players & do something entirely different, often on the same day. This had to do with strategy as well as playing time. Ahh, those Patriot guys, you know I love 'em.
My choice for Chiefs offensive coordinator, Al Saunders, is going to stay with the Raiders after losing out on the Kansas City job. He will become Senior Offensive Assistant, he was formerly the offensive coordinator, but Oakland hired Greg Knapp to fill that position.
And what will become of Jim Zorn? The Chiefs quarterbacks coach also failed to get the O.C. job in Kansas City. Romeo Crennel said he hopes Zorn will stay on in his position after refusing to let the Chicago Bears interview him for their QB coaching vacancy. Now that the Bears have filled that spot & Brian Daboll has been hired, will Zorn stay? I doubt he will be on the Chiefs' staff much longer, Daboll will most likely want to bring in his own guy to fill the position. Daboll made it clear in his press conference, he will not be a position coach.
Elvis is in the building, well sort of. Mizzou left tackle Elvis Fisher received an extra year, his 6th, of eligibility from the NCAA yesterday. He was lost for the season in summer camp with a ruptured patellar tendon. Prior to that, the Florida native had started 40 consecutive games beginning in his redshirt freshman season. He was the Tigers' most highly rated offensive lineman & his return, when healthy, is a huge deal for Gary Pinkel's team as they head into their first season in the SEC. Sophomore Justin Britt filled in admirably for Fisher & he will most likely be moved to right tackle. Starting center Travis Ruth returns & with 4-star recruit, Evan Boehm, expected to play right away at guard, the Tigers could have a pretty decent offensive line going to summer camp.

One of the premiere games to kickoff the coming college football season with be Michigan vs. Alabama. The September 1st game will be played at the Jones-Mahal in Arlington Texas. Michigan has already sold their allotment of 25,000 tickets. Alabama has yet to put theirs on sale. The remaining 30,000 seats will be offered to Dallas Cowboy season ticket holders. Even if they don't want to go to the game, they'll probably buy the tickets, Lord knows they could become very valuable on the internet, worth way more than the $125-285 face value. Should be a great game to kickoff the 2012 season.
Remember Tiquan Underwood, the wide receiver/special teams player cut by Bill Belichick on the eve of the Super Bowl? Keeping a stiff upper lip & not whining about his situation worked out for Underwood. The Patriots resigned him today & placed him back on the roster so he could be part of their off-season workouts & OTA's.
I told you yesterday the TV ratings showed 111.3 million people watched most or all of the game. yesterday, NBCSports.com revealed they had another 2.1 million viewers on their internet feed of the game. Amazing.
The St. Louis Rams have signed Jovan Olafioye, an offensive tackle from the Canadian Football League. The 6' 6" 325-pound tackle played on the left side for the B.C. Lions. He played his college football at North Carolina Central after transferring from Grand Rapids Junior College. He was voted the league's best offensive lineman last season. I don't know that Olafioye is a candidate to start for the Rams, but looking at younger players for depth is a smart move for Jeff Fisher, most of the veteran players acquired for depth recently have not worked out well in St. Louis. Olafioye had been courted by 8 NFL teams recently.
