FRIDAY NIGHT NOTES
With the Super Bowl in the rear view mirror & the scouting combine beginning this coming Thursday, I'm taking it easy right now. So if you were wondering where the daily posts were, one, there isn't a lot going on & two, you can speculate about Peyton Manning's future just so much. So I'll be laying low the next few days, but once the first forty is run at Indianapolis, I'll be here with multiple posts everyday.
The Horned Frog football program is undergoing somewhat of a crisis. Four TCU players were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly selling drugs on campus. Another 11 students were also arrested after a lengthy investigation. So why is the football program in crisis? A recruit told coach Gary Patterson he wouldn't be attending TCU after his visit to the Fort Worth campus exposed him to an abundance of pot. Patterson scheduled immediate urine tests for his entire team. It's been reported, tho not confirmed, as many as 60 players failed the test. It also became apparent where they got their pot, from the four teammates who were arrested. Patterson's program has made great strides over the past five years & now they've really stepped up, moving into the Big-12. But this could set TCU's program back, especially if there are mass dismissals or suspensions. Here's hoping the rumored figure of 60-players is way off, it better be for the immediate future of the Horned Frog program.
Mizzou announced their spring game will be on April 14th. Another Kansas City area player has given Gary Pinkel a verbal commitment, their 3rd for the 2013 class. Anthony Sherrils, from Hogan Prep, is going to play for the Tigers. He has wanted to go to Mizzou since his cousin, basketball star Marcus Denman, went to Columbia. Denman also attended Hogan. Sherrils has played all over for the Rams, DB, WR, RB & KR. He said in his announcement he "would leave it to the Missouri coaches as to where he would play. I just wanted to be a Mizzou Tiger & by committing now, maybe I can help recruit more players."
A new revelation in the Peyton Manning story. He had one more procedure done on his neck than had previously been reported. It was news to about everyone around the Colts' organization. O.K. that's enough Manning for today.
The Miami Dolphins signed former Kansas City wide receiver & kick returner, Quinton Lawrence. But the Phish plan to move Lawrence to defensive back. The Chiefs had toyed with this in training camp, but later cut Lawrence despite a decent showing during the preseason.
I watched about 40-minutes of two Randy Moss webcasts & folks, I think Randy has been hittin' his bong a little too much. They were just plain weird & like Twitter & Facebook, once it's on the internet, it's there for everyone to see. Like potential coaches & owners. I've always liked Moss, but he's hurting himself with these bizarre webcasts he calls "Moss TV."
The data is in on the change in kickoffs in the NFL & with the data released on Thursday, don't expect to see them go back to the old way anytime soon. What the data tells the NFL is 50% fewer concussions on kickoffs. Touchbacks were way up & coupled with shorter running starts, the collisions were far fewer & less violent. If the league is truly serious about cutting down on concussions, I see no way they'll repeal this rule change.
Linda & I watched the HBO/NFL Films documentary on Joe Namath tonight. It was excellent, the 87-minute doc was over all too quickly. Several years ago I responded to a post written on another website that essentially said Namath was the most overrated quarterback in history. After reading my response, they asked me to write my thoughts on both Namath & the AFL in a 2000-word post & if I made a good case, they would post it on their website. I wrote it, it was posted & the feedback was more than 95% positive. That same site is now trying to somewhat minimize the career of Tom Brady. The people on this site see everything thru numbers & stats. What got me riled in the first place was with everyone writing for the site was under 30-years of age, how could they possibly judge Joe Namath? They never saw him play outside of a few highlight reels. The HBO documentary pointed to Namath's overall importance to professional football, specifically televised professional football. Namath was huge during this time & his impact to the game could not be measured by stats alone. If you are old enough to have seen Joe Namath in his heyday, you were lucky. He was a very special talent. If you get HBO On Demand, take the time & see this documentary.
